No. 6 DeSoto Hands Jesuit Season-Opening Setback

A strong performance from TCU verbal commit Shawn Robinson vaulted the DeSoto Eagles, ranked sixth in the state by the Associated Press, past the Jesuit Dallas Rangers, 47-13, on Friday night at Eagle Stadium.

Junior Jack Tabor found pay dirt for the Rangers (0-1) in the fourth quarter, capping a game-high, 14-play, 71-yard drive with a two-yard plunge. Junior Parker Towns impressed on Friday, throwing for 83 yards on 11-of-18 passing, while senior Jacob Palisch completed five passes for 63 yards.

Jesuit third year Israel Ollarzabal was 2-for-2 in field goal attempts, clearing the uprights from 22 and 34 yards and adding three touchbacks on four kickoffs. Senior John Wunderlick led the team in rushing with 49 yards on eight carries. Senior Connor Jackson made his two receptions count, averaging 27 yards per catch to finish with 54 receiving yards, while junior Alekzander McGlone tied Wunderlick with a team-high three receptions.

Defensively, seniors Jack Metz and Jack Lynch joined junior Zachary Harry with three solo stops, while senior captain Jordan Rice secured two tackles for loss, totaling 21 yards. Junior Hank Bitterman snagged an 18-yard interception in the second quarter.

DeSoto (1-0) finished Friday's season opener with 616 yards of total offense, including 281 passing yards from Robinson, who scored two touchdowns through the air and added two more on the ground to finish the game with 356 all-purpose yards.

The Rangers held tight with the Eagles through the first half, trailing 14-3 at the break after Ollarzabal's first field goal with 9:18 left in the second quarter. The Eagles outscored Jesuit 20-3 in the third quarter to take a 34-6 lead. The Rangers traded touchdowns with DeSoto in the fourth and were unable to stage a late comeback against a team that averaged 12.3 yards per play.

Jesuit Dallas displayed strong efficiency on third-down situations, converting 8-of-17 opportunities while adding three drives of five minutes or more.

Jesuit will next compete in the 2016 Cotton Bowl Showcase, battling Plano East at 5 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 2 inside the historic venue. The game will be broadcasted live by KHYI 95.3 The Range, with Tom Walsh and Jack Fitzsimmons '76 calling the action live to continue their 19th season on the air.
