A stout defensive effort and milestone performance from senior
Max Abmas sparked No. 7 Jesuit Dallas to a 53-29 win over Mansfield Summit on Tuesday at Walsh Gymnasium. Jesuit moves to 11-0 on the year with the victory, setting a new season-best in points allowed by holding the Jaguars to under 30 points.
Abmas became the third Ranger over the last two seasons to cross the 1,000-point plateau, recording the achievement on a three-pointer with 5:46 remaining in the fourth quarter. The senior closed the contest with 19 points, shooting 6-of-10 from the floor and 4-of-6 from three-point range. Abmas added two assists and two steals to complete a stellar evening.
Sophomore
Gavin Perryman posted his fifth double-digit performance of the season with a 6-of-10 clip, closing the bout with 15 points. Senior
Julius Marble added 12 points and nine rebounds, leading the team in boards while adding two blocks. Senior
Anthony Hollerich added four points and four boards as part of a Jesuit offensive contingent that shot 47.2 percent from the floor.
Defensively, Jesuit forced 11 turnovers and out-rebounded Summit, 29-24, holding the Jaguars to a 26.7 clip on the floor. Abmas and senior
Connor Wilson forced two steals each while Marble snagged seven defensive rebounds. Hollerich and junior
Darryl Brown dragged down four defensive boards each.
Jesuit continued its strong performance in the first quarter this season, opening a 17-5 lead on the Jaguars. A three-pointer by Abmas capped a 10-0, game-opening run as the Blue and Gold held Summit without a made bucket until the 2:28 mark of the opening quarter. Perryman scored his first bucket of the game on the fast break with 32 seconds remaining to send Jesuit into the second with a 12-point lead.
In the second quarter, the Rangers continued to put the pressure on the Jaguars, but neither team was able to score over the first minute of the period. A four-point swing on back-to-back buckets from Abmas increased the lead to 16 points before Perryman took over with five points to quickly snuff out a Summit rally. Summit closed the half with a 7-2 run over the final 2:51 to send the Rangers into the halftime break with a 28-16 lead.
Summit made a run at the Ranger lead in the third, but Jesuit held down the Summit shooters to a 4-of-12 clip from the field with two turnovers. Perryman added eight points to give the Rangers a 10-8 win in the quarter and a 38-24 advantage going into the fourth. The Jaguars only hit one bucket in the fourth quarter, a three-pointer with 1:13 remaining, helping the Rangers cruise to the victory on the back of 10 fourth-quarter points from Abmas.
Jesuit will embark upon a two-game road trip this Friday as the Rangers will travel to South Grand Prairie H.S. to battle the Warriors at 7:30 p.m. Jesuit will then travel to Mansfield Timberview to battle the undefeated top-ranked team in UIL 5A on Tuesday, Dec. 11 at 7:30 p.m. before returning home for the non-district finale against Sulphur Springs at 6 p.m. on Dec. 14.
