Rangers Edge Highland Park in Double Dual Split

The Rangers closed the dual meet season with a 5-2-1 record after splitting a double dual meet on Jan. 5 in Highland Park. Jesuit edged the hosting Scots, 92-91 and dropped a 100-78 decision to St. Mark's in the squad's final warmup prior to the University Interscholastic League (UIL) District 8-6A District Championship on Jan. 24.

Jesuit and Highland Park battled throughout the event and entered the meet-ending 400 free relay with the Rangers trailing the Scots. The 400 free relay team of sophomore Will McKinney, freshman Alexander Hung, junior Ivan Lopez and freshman Jackson Summers won the relay with a 3:25.35, edging St. Mark's by .26 seconds and defeating Highland Park by five seconds to earn the one-point victory.

Overall, the Rangers secured nine top-three finishes at the event and four individual event victories. McKinney won the 200 I.M. in convincing fashion, clocking a 1:59.72 to defeat Highland Park's Henry Wang by seven seconds, adding a win in the 500 free with a 5:00.51. McKinney enters district with the team's top time in both events and is a major contender to capture the district crown in both events.

Summers captured the 200 free with a 1:50.92, narrowly missing his previous season-best park of 1:48.13 at the North Zone TISCA meet. Summers sparked a 1-3 finish as Savarese closed out the race in third with a 1:53.32, and Summers added a third-place finish of his own as the team's top finisher in the 100 free, clocking a 50.39.

Hung finished third in the 50 free with a 23.89, junior Ivan Lopez swam a 56.53 in the 100 fly to finish fourth and Savarese sparked a 4-5-6 finish with Lopez and senior Ryan Brown, respectively with a 58.16 in the 100 back. Jack Young earned the Rangers' final individual win with a 195.55 score on the one-meter diving board, defeating Highland Park's Dash Woldford by six points. Jesuit's 200 medley relay team of Savarese, McKinney, Lopez and Summers opened the meet in third with a 1:44.13 total relay time.

Jesuit will head to the Loos Aquatic Center on Friday, Jan. 25 for the District 8-6A Championships. The Rangers finished third at last year's district championship and will battle against J.J. Pearce, Richardson, Lake Highlands, Berkner, Garland, North Garland, Skyline and W.T. White for the district crown. The first race is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
