Will McKinney's Record-Setting 500 Free Highlights Convincing Win Over Highland Park

11/12/2020 8:31:00 PM

Senior Will McKinney set a new school record in the 500 free, powering Jesuit Dallas to a convincing, 215-97 win over Highland Park on Tuesday evening. Jesuit set a new season high in scoring, sweeping the individual and relay events to remain unbeaten on the year while extending a substantial consecutive meet winning streak.

McKinney swam a 4:39.09 in the 500 free, narrowly edging the previous program record of 4:39.72, recorded by all-state swimmer Brendan Feehery '16 in 2015. The Boston College commit opened his impressive swim with a trio of 50-yard splits under 28 seconds, staying between the 28-29 second mark for a majority of the race before racing home for a 26.61 split in the final 50 yards of the race. McKinney won the event by 30 seconds and etched his name into the Jesuit Dallas record book to continue an impressive career which included a state qualification in the 200 I.M. last spring.

In addition to his record-setting swim, McKinney won the 200 I.M. with a 2:04.07 and joined freshman William Savarese, junior Alexander Hung and junior Jackson Summers on the team's victorious 200 medley relay team. The Rangers captured the win with a 1:41.68 total relay time, followed by the second-place relay team of sophomore Palmer Bowman, senior Kevin Grant, senior Alec Chong and junior Blake Butz.

Senior Jack Young crushed his previous season-best score in the one-meter dive, scoring a 236.00 to earn a 12-point win in the event. Thatch Balady scored for the Blue and Gold with a third-place 182.00, followed by a fourth-place finish by Phillip Thompson (170.00) and a fifth-place landing for freshman Sam An.

Summers scored Jesuit's first podium sweep of the event, sparking a 1-2-3 finish in the 50 free with a victorious 22.81. Hung's 23.20 earned the senior second place, followed by a third-place, 23.89 from Butz. Peckhal hit the wall in 54.53 for a win in the 100 fly, recording Jesuit's second sweep of the top three placings. Summers' second individual win of the meet, a 50.21 in the 100 free, earned Jesuit its third 1-2-3 finish of the evening.

Peckham picked up a win in the 100 back with a time of 56.27 as William Savarese tacked on a 1:02.36 to win the 100 breast. James Savarese picked up a second-place finish in the 100 back with a 58.24 while William Saverese finished with a 58.98 to place third and secure Jesuit's fifth sweep of the night.

Sophomore Leonardo Palaez captured the win in the 200 free, hitting the wall in 1:51.93 before finishing second in the 500 free with a 5:09.96. Bowman added a 1:52.12 to finish second in the 200 free as Jaden Giunta finished behind McKinney in the 200 I.M. with a second-place, 2:12.61, adding a third-place finish in the 500 free.

Jesuit won the 200 free relay with a 1:35.06 total relay time recorded by the team of James Savarese, Butz, Bowman and Hung. The Rangers' 400 free relay capped the convincing performance with a 3:23.13 total relay time, as Summers, J. Savarese, Peckham and McKinney put the exclamation mark on Jesuit's eighth win of the season.

The Rangers are 8-0 on the year and extend their winning streak to 18 matches, dating back to early 2019. Jesuit's next challenge will come in the form of Greenhill and John Paul II, who will face off against the Rangers in a tri-meet on Dec. 2. The meet is scheduled for 6 p.m. from The Greenhill School in Addison, Texas.
