LEWISVILLE, Texas - After last week's district meet, Jesuit Dallas head coach
Doug Moyse felt good with the number of qualifiers he had going into the regional meet. After Wednesday's diving and Friday's swimming prelims he started to feel even more comfortable with what his team was putting on the board.
The squad executed the plan to perfection in the finals on Saturday, scoring 353 points en route to a repeat UIL Region 2-6A Championship that saw four individual and two relays achieve automatic qualification into the Class 6A State meet in two weeks in Austin. Lewisville Marcus was second for the second-straight year with 219 points and Allen was third with 216.50 points.
After finishing fifth in the 200 medley relay to open the meet, Jesuit senior
Sebastian Suwanda was seventh in the 200 freestyle, with junior J.P. McCosker taking tenth, sophomore
Noah Ruhl finishing 12th and junior
Peter Hasik 16th.
Junior
Jonah Ruhl made the first big statement, winning the 200 yard individual medley in 1:49.51. Teammates
Javier Ruiz and
Michael Tobin added points in the consolation final.
A race later in the 50 freestyle, senior
Sam Kennington broke the school record with a 20.75, finishing second and missing first by .01. Seniors
Luke Lary was seventh and
Jackson Addison-Jordan finished 14th.
Lary won the 100 fly for the second-consecutive year, touching wall in 49.08, 1.7 seconds ahead of the competition. Junior
Drew Shippey added 14 points with a fifth place effort.
Ruhl added a second gold medal to his meet in the 100 free with a 45.02. Kennington was fifth, along with sophomore
Porter Pope in 11th and Addison-Jordan in 15th, giving the Rangers 42 points in the event.
Suwanda and junior
Grant Wilton scored out of the championship final in the 500 free, while McCosker was the second finisher in the consolation final.
In the 200 yard free relay, Jesuit's quarter of Kennington, Lary, Suwanda and Ruhl came from behind in the final 50 to win gold over Marcus with a 1:24.41. Ruhl's anchor leg of 20.27 was the difference as he outtouched Hudson Roybal at the wall.
Roybal won the next race, the 100 back - his only individual event - as Shippey and Tobin scored for Jesuit.
Wilton and Pope totaled 27 points as they went fifth and sixth, respectively in the 100 breaststroke.
In the final event of the meet, Jesuit and Marcus went back and forth on the first three legs of the 400 free relay before the Marauders won by .17 in the end. Jesuit's time of 3:04.95 did set a new school record.
Jonah Ruhl and Moyse were named the Swimmer and Coach of the Meet, respectively, in the awards ceremony.
With the top two finishers in each event earning automatic qualification into the state meet, the remaining 16 spots in each event will be filled by the fastest times from the remaining swimmers across the four region meets.
The 5A/6A state meet will be February 20-21 at the Lee & Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center on the University of Texas campus.
