AREA ROUND PREVIEW: Jesuit and Denton Guyer Meet in The Colony

3/30/2021 3:51:00 PM

Penalty Kicks Send Jesuit to UIL Area Round: Senior Benton Bacile launched a penalty kick into the net to end a physical, competitive showdown and send Jesuit into the area round with a hard-fought win over Bowie on Friday. Seniors Grant Koshakji, Ryan Shea, Cullen Scott and junior Alec Gomez added successful conversions as a miss on Bowie's fourth kick attempt opened the door for Jesuit to advance. The Rangers were unable to score despite providing plenty of pressure in both halves, earning 12 corner kicks and 11 free kicks which helped produce 15 shots and six shots on goal. Bowie took 11 total shots, but sophomore goalkeeper Cole Hines came up big by stopping all five shots on goal.

Wildcats Topple Marauders: Denton Guyer defeated state-ranked Flower Mound Marcus, 1-0, on Friday to earn their way into the second round of the UIL 6A Soccer State Tournament. The Wildcats upended the Marauders on a 61st minute tally by Oscar Ronquillo, and a determined defense was able to lock down a Flower Mound Marcus team that ended the regular season as the top-ranked team in the Metroplex according to the Dallas Morning News. Denton Guyer closed the regular season eighth in the area with a 12-3-1 record.

Up Next: The winner of tonight's area round showdown will take on either McKinney Boyd or Irving H.S. in a Region I-6A Quarterfinal. Boyd defeated Plano, 2-0, in the first round of the playoffs and finished the regular season ranked fifth in the area with a 14-5-1 record. Irving, who finished third in District 7-6A, secured a 14-6-2 mark and ended the year ranked 10th in the Metroplex. The Tigers and Broncos kick off at 7:30 p.m. on Mar. 30 in Allen, Texas.
