Jordan Lawlar became the third Jesuit Dallas baseball player to earn Gatorade Texas Player of the Year honors, as the team's former starting shortstop earned the title on Tuesday afternoon. Lawlar joins current major leaguers Josh Bell '11 and Kyle Muller '16 as Rangers who have earned the award as Jesuit Dallas baseball picks up its third Gatorade Texas Player of the Year over the last 10 years.
Â
Lawlar adds the
Gatorade Texas Player of the Year award to a growing postseason list that includes a spot on the Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association (THSBCA) All-State Team along with the District 7-6A Most Valuable Player award. The senior finished his senior campaign with a .412 batting average, 40 hits, five doubles, four triples, six home runs and a team-leading 37 RBI, good for second in the Dallas Morning News Area Rankings.
Â
Racking up a 1.288 OPS, Lawlar went 32-for-32 in stolen base attempts, finishing fifth in the Metroplex. During district play, Lawlar led the team with a .450 batting average, and only stuck out five times during the district season. Racking up an .825 slugging percentage and 23 RBI during the team's 14-game district run, Lawlar, who is currently committed to play for Vanderbilt University in the fall and is one of the top prospects in the upcoming MLB Amateur draft, becomes the second Ranger over the last three seasons to be named District MVP and the third since 2016.
Â
The Vanderbilt commit will now wait to see if he becomes the second student-athlete in Jesuit Dallas baseball history to be named
Gatorade National Player of the Year, scheduled to be announced in July. Kyle Muller '16 was named
Gatorade National Player of the year during his senior season to culminate an outstanding career that has continue to progress as the lefty pitcher has earned his way onto the Atlanta Braves' pitching rotation.
Â
Lawlar is expected to be a rising topic of conversation over the coming weeks as the shortstop is pegged as one of the top prospects in the upcoming MLB Amateur Draft. Currently, Lawlar is ranked No. 1 in the
ESPN prospect rankings and No. 2 in the most recent
MLB.com draft prospect rankings.
