AREA ROUND PREVIEW: Jesuit, Coppell Prepare for Area Round Showdown

5/12/2022 2:04:00 PM

Racing Past the Colts: Last week, Jesuit swept Arlington and punched its ticket to the UIL Region I-6A Area Round. Heads-up base running by the Rangers, highlighted by a run on a wild pitch by junior Callen Singhania, gave the Rangers a 4-3 win on May 5 before junior Jake Storey threw a perfect game through five innings, sending Jesuit to an 8-1, series-clinching win on May 6.

What's the Storey?: Senior Jake Storey is 5-0 over his last five starts with four complete games and two shutouts. Storey threw his lone no-hitter of the season on Apr. 22, striking out 14 of 15 batters faced en route to a five-inning no-hitter on senior night.

Securing Momentum: Over the last 20 games, Jesuit Dallas has pieced together a 15-5 record, are hitting .309 as a team while holding opponents to a .197 clip. The Rangers have continued to dominate the basepaths, converting 70-of-79 stolen base attempts over that same stretch.

Maintaining History: Jesuit Dallas has qualified for 12 consecutive postseasons dating back to 2009. The Rangers have won at least one postseason series in eight straight appearances, and hope to snap a streak of five straight area round eliminations this season against Coppell.

Stellar Freshman: Freshman Jake Fults has made an immediate impact for Jesuit during his first season for the Blue and Gold. Fults led the team in hitting during district play with a .417 average, racking up a team-high 15 hits and a 1.006 OPS.

Nearing Another Milestone: Jesuit Dallas baseball will soon be on Quin-centennial watch as head coach Brian Jones enters this weekend with an overall record of 489-204-9.

Cowboys Tame the Broncos: Coppell defeated McKinney Boyd in a two-game sweep, battling with the Broncos and ultimately securing a pair of 3-2 victories to advance. In game one, the Cowboys rallied from a 2-0 deficit with a pair of runs in the sixth, pushing the contest to extra innings. Senior Walker Polk, Baylor-bound at the end of the season, scored the go-ahead run in the eighth, and senior Will Boylan was able to hold the Boyd bats at bay to secure the win. On Friday, Boylan once again was the man on the mound at the end of the game, striking out four batters over two innings of relief.

Coppell History: The Cowboys have qualified for the playoffs for 15 straight seasons, and enter the area round after reaching the regional semifinal last season. The 2021 playoff run saw Coppell sweep Denton Guyer, Jesuit and Prosper before falling to Keller in a three-game series. Coppell entered this postseason as the top seed out of District 6-6A, earned with a 9-3 win over Flower Mound Marcus in a district championship tiebreaker game. Coppell has won one state title, earning the 4A title in 1995.

Up Next: The winner of this series will take on either Martin or Prosper in the Region I-6A Quarterfinal round.
