The Jesuit Dallas swimming & diving team will be well represented at the 2024 University Interscholastic League (UIL) 6A State Championship after the Rangers placed third at the 2024 UIL Region II-6A Championship, held on February 10 at the LISD Westside Natatorium in Lewisville, Texas. The Rangers will send 200 Medley and 400 Free Relay teams to state after school record-breaking swims, and senior
William Savarese will head to Austin after capturing a pair of individual regional championships.
Savarese won the 500 free regional championship with a 4:26.61, holding serve after finishing prelims as the top qualifier with a 4:39.69. The University of Michigan signee tacked on another regional championship with a victorious 1:48.59 in the regional finals.
The Rangers' 200 medley relay set a new school record and earned the call-up to state after placing third at regionals with a 1:34.67. The team of
Jonah Ruhl (24.67), Savarese (25.18),
Luke Lary (23.01) and
Sam Kennington (21.81) teamed up to topple the previous mark of 1:35.25 that was set in 2006.
Another school record fell in the 400 free relay, as the Rangers earned the automatic bid with a second-place, 3:05.98 total relay time. Ruhl opened the race with a 46.98, followed by a 46.58 by Lary and a 47.51 by
Sebastian Suwanda before Savarese hit the water to swim the record-breaking anchor. The 3:05.98 eclipses the old record of 3:07.69, posted in 2022.
Ruhl narrowly missed state in the 200 free, finishing third in the A-Final with a 1:41.76. Ruhl's personal best time fell 1.75 seconds short of surpassing Flower Mound junior Aubrey Jaya for the automatic berth to state. Ruhl was the top freshman finisher in the event, and bested the other District 7-6A participant, Highland Park's GB Stalnaker, by five seconds. Ruhl was the top qualifier heading into the A-Final after clocking a 1:43.63 in the prelims and added a fifth place finish in the 100 free with a 47.37.
Lary earned a spot in two A-Finals, finishing fourth in the 50 free (21.78) and fifth in the 100 fly (51.19).
Flyn Hughes earned a spot in the A-Final of the 100 fly, finishing seventh overall in the event to compliment a 10th place finish in the 100 back (56.13) while Kennington picked up and eighth place finish in the 50 free and 13th in the 100 free (49.91) (22.30). Suwanda won the B-Final of the 200 free with a 1:45.25 and Teddy Scherer scored for the Rangers with a 1:00.68 to finish 13th in the 100 breast.
Savarese and the Ranger relay teams will next advance to the 2024 UIL 6A Swimming & Diving Championships, which will take place on Feb. 23-24 in Austin, Texas at the Lee & Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center.
