Kingston Stephens Wins Bronze at UIL 6A State Championships

2/17/2025 9:42:00 AM

Junior Kingston Stephens recorded Jesuit's best finish at the University Interscholastic League (UIL) 6A State Championship since 2014, securing a bronze medal in the 106 pound division over the two-day tournament at the Berry Center in Cypress, Texas.

Stephens pieced together an incredible resurgence following a narrow, 10-6 decision loss to Keller Central's Matthew Govea in the opening round, rattling off five straight victories to earn the bronze. Stephens erupted for a 17-1 technical fall over James Weller from Katy Taylor in the first consolation round, followed by another technical fall, 16-1, over Katy Paetow's Andy Vila in the second consolation round.

The junior exercised his flair for the dramatic in the third consolation round. Stephens trailed Nick Payne from The Woodlands College Park, 4-3, with under 30 seconds remaining in the third and final period. Payne was called for stalling with nine seconds remaining, allowing Stephens the opportunity to record a match-winning reversal at the buzzer to secure a 5-4 win and punch his ticket to the consolation semifinal.

In the consolation semifinal, Stephens earned a rematch against Govea with a trip to the third-place match on the line. After a scoreless first period, Stephens picked up an escape and a three-point takedown in the second to pick up a 4-0 lead going into the third. Stephens kept Govea at bay over the final period to clinch the 4-2 win and advance to the third-place match. Stephens clinched the bronze with a dominant showing over Keller's Drew Brinkmeier, scoring a 16-8 major decision and securing his 40th victory of the year in the process.

Stephens becomes Jesuit's first podium finisher since 2022 and secures the Rangers' first top-three finish since Shane Ross '15 finished second at the 2014 UIL 5A State Championships. The junior secured five individual tournament championships during the season, including an individual district championship on Jan. 30 and a second place finish at regionals. Stephens finished the year with a 40-5 record, securing 17 pins, 17 technical falls, two major decisions and four standard decisions.
