Rangers Close In on District Championship With Win Over MacArthur

2/28/2025 3:26:00 PM

Jesuit Dallas soccer is at the precipice of the program's first district championship since 2017 after defeating MacArthur, 2-0, on Tuesday in Irving. The Rangers can clinch the district championship with a regulation victory over Richardson on Friday, February 28.

Junior Cooper McGough scored both goals for the Rangers, logging his first of the contest in the sixth minute. Senior Noah McGough sent in a strong throw-in from the near sideline, and sophomore Zane Roland quickly flipped a header to McGough, who was there to finish the opportunity and spot the Rangers a 1-0 advantage. In the late moments of the first half, MacArthur committed a foul to give Jesuit a penalty kick opportunity. McGough slotted home the penalty to send Jesuit into halftime with a 2-0 lead.

Jesuit held MacArthur at bay in the second half, holding the Cardinals to one shot and one corner kick. By comparison, the Rangers finished the bout with 19 shots, including eight shots on goal while seniors Jake Chostner and Marcelo Elizondo combined for the shutout.

The Rangers currently lead District 7-6A with a 10-1-0 record and have totaled 30 points on the season and can put the district race out of reach with the three points earned via a regulation win. Lake Highlands is currently in second place with 23 points (7-2-2), followed by Irving H.S. in third with 22 points (7-3-1). Jesuit and Richardson will meet at 7:30 p.m. on Friday in a matchup preceded by soccer senior night. Prior to the showdown between the Rangers and Eagles, Jesuit will recognize the 14 senior members of the soccer program.
