Jesuit Reaches Elite Eight With Overtime Win Over Byron Nelson

Overtime goals from senior Drew Koshakji and sophomore Zane Roland sent Jesuit Dallas to its first University Interscholastic League (UIL) Regional Championship game since 2017 with a 2-0 win over Byron Nelson on Friday at Buddy Echols Field in Coppell. The win not only provides the Rangers with their 20th win of the season but sets up a regional final showdown between Jesuit and Southlake Carroll, scheduled for 6 p.m. on Tuesday, April 1 at Children's Health Stadium in Prosper.

In the third minute of overtime, senior Noah McGough sent in a throw-in that was cleared to the top of the box by Byron Nelson. Koshakji found some open space and launched a ball from 20 yards out that sniped the upper right corner of the goal to give Jesuit the go-ahead tally. Moments later, senior Clyde Araiza found Roland open on the far side of the field, who patiently worked his way around the last defender and goalkeeper to give the Rangers a massive insurance goal midway through the first overtime period.

Overall, Jesuit out-shot Byron Nelson, 25-12 en route to the win. Senior Jake Chostner played the first half in goal and secured two saves before senior Marcelo Elizondo took over for the second half and the duration of overtime, finishing the match with two saves of his own. Senior Octavio Monjaras put the pressure on the Bobcats with six shots while Roland took five shots, including three shots on target. Noah McGough registered two shots on goal while Araiza picked up four shots. Senior Andres Benitez took two shots while seniors Mario Zamora, Max Sabogal, Grant Gomez and junior Cooper McGough each secured a shot.

Jesuit will match up against Southlake Carroll in the UIL Region I-6A Division II Championship game. Southlake enters Tuesday's regional championship with a 17-3-4 record and advanced to the fourth round of the playoffs with a 3-1 win over Haltom. The Dragons' playoff run began with a 3-0 win over Mansfield on March 21 and continued with a 2-0 victory over San Angelo Central.
