Senior Matt Slovak rushed for four touchdowns and junior Max Loughborough tacked on two of his own as Jesuit used a ground attack to storm past the W.T. White Longhorns Thursday night, 58-24. Jesuit (6-2, 4-1 9-6A) moves into a tie for second place in District 9-6A, with an opportunity to break the tie at the Homecoming game on Friday, October 31, against Irving MacArthur.
The Rangers set the tone on the first play from scrimmage when receiver Charlie Eikenberg launched an unexpected pass to fellow senior Garett Amy for a 59-yard strike just 20 seconds into the game. That ignited what would be an explosive first quarter for both offenses, as the neighborhood rivals put up a combined 45 points and over 400 yards of offense in the first frame alone. Eikenberg would catch a 75-yard TD pass later in the quarter, making it the second time this season the senior captain has both caught a touchdown and thrown a touchdown in the same game.
Slovak (pictured above) carried in two TDs in the first quarter and two more in the second, building towards 128 yards on 10 carries. Loughborough found pay dirt twice in the second half, finishing the night with 60 yards on five attempts. Amy caught six passes for 173 yards, while Eikenberg, senior Matt Miller, and junior Adam Holtz each had a catch. Kicker John Wengierski had another perfect night, going 6-for-6 on extra point tries.
The Jesuit defense had their hands full with W.T. White quarterback Jackson Fults in the first quarter, but made an impressive adjustment to stifle the Longhorns (4-4, 2-3) for the final three frames. Fults ran for two long TDs in the first quarter, but Jesuit shut down the run game after that. Known as a perennial running threat, Fults gained 0 net yards on the ground in the second half.
The Rangers are a win away from clinching a UIL playoff berth for the fifth straight season. A win on October 31 over Irving MacArthur would guarantee the district's top seed in UIL 6A Division II playoffs.
