After winning the
District 9-6A Championship and making the UIL playoffs for the 12
th consecutive season, Jesuit Soccer suffered a heartbreaking defeat Thursday night at the hands of the Mesquite Skeeters, 0-0 (4-5 SO).
Â
Jesuit appeared to have the upper hand through most of the match, but neither team scored in regulation and the game went to overtime. In OT, the Rangers had all the momentum, and peppered Mesquite's net with shots, but had a goal called back on an enigmatic call in the 18-yard box and weren't able to put the game winner in the net. Â The game then went to penalty kicks, where Mesquite scored on all five attempts, and the Rangers scored on four.
Â
It was a heartbreaking way to end a hugely successful season. After a slow start, Jesuit won ten consecutive games to take the district championship, a run that Coach Charlie DeLong said proved the team's character and work-ethic. Five of those ten games were shutouts, and even in the final game of the season, the Ranger defense registered a clean sheet for 100 minutes. Goalkeepers
Collin Buechel and
Luke Ostrander helped carry the team all season, and got help from the back line of
Jacob Su,
Jon Balok,
Ramiro Garcia, and
Nathan Escanuela.
Â
Buechel and Su are both seniors, and got help in Thursday's match from classmates
Collin Stack,
Kyle Hazelbaker and
William Feist defensively. Other Jesuit seniors who played their final match Thursday include
Ben Sloan,
Juan Ramirez, and
Alex Koshakji.
Â
Junior
Patrick Howell finished the season as the goal leader for the team with 10. Senior
Juan Ramirez and sophomore
Aldo Quevedo each had 9 goals on the season, while Quevedo also led the team in assists with 4.
