[Jesuit 6 - Nimitz 4:
Box Score]
Bryce Bonner stepped to the plate with his back against the wall. The Rangers trailed Nimitz 4-2 in the bottom of the seventh inning when Bonner stepped up with two outs and a runner on first. He was Jesuit's last hope to maintain its undefeated district record and remain at the top of the District 9-6A standings.
First four pitches to Bonner: foul, foul, foul, foul.
Despite Jesuit being down to its final out, Bonner went up there swinging. Despite being down to his final strike, the catcher stayed aggressive.
On the fifth pitch of the at bat, Bonner catapulted the ball over the left field fence at Wright Field, bringing the Rangers back to life and tying the score 4-4. Â The Rangers and Vikings would head to extra innings, and sophomore
Jacob Palisch tossed his fourth shutout frame in the top of the eighth.
In the bottom of the eighth, after a
Chase Jennings walk, senior
Darius Hill clobbered another ball over the left field fence, walking off to the tune of a 6-4 Ranger win.
The two home runs provided a dramatic ending to Jesuit's come-from-behind victory over Nimitz. The Rangers trailed 4-0 in the fourth inning, then started slowly chipping away at the Vikings' lead.
Angelo Winings scored off a
Nic Ready single in the bottom of the fourth, then
Chase Jennings scored thanks to a
Kyle Muller fielder's choice in the fifth. That brought the score to 4-2, where it remained until Bonner's heroics with two outs and two strikes in the bottom of the seventh.
The win brings Jesuit to 7-0 in district play, and grants the Rangers sole possession of first place. Jesuit takes on Nimitz (6-1 in district) again Friday, April 10, at 7:30.
