Pre-Game Interview with Jesuit Head Coach Brandon HickmanAfter a convincing win over Arlington Bowie in the season opener on Aug. 28, the Jesuit Dallas Rangers (1-0) will travel to Tom Kimbrough Stadium to battle the 1-0 Plano East Panthers on Sept. 3 at 7:30 p.m.
Rangers Blank Volunteers: Last season, the Arlington Bowie volunteers defeated the Rangers, 72-49, behind 872 total yards of offense. Last Friday, Jesuit turned the tables on the Volunteers, recording the first shutout since the 2013 season in a definitive, 35-0 victory over Bowie in front of a Postell Stadium crowd of 3,260. The Bowie offense was only able to effort 110 total yards of offense with 96 yards on the ground compared to 14 yards in the air, a stark contrast from the dominating ast year by the Volunteers. The Rangers picked up their first season-opening win since 2012, snapping a two-year skid on opening week while upending Bowie for the first time in program history.
Palisch Impressive in Season Debut: In the season opener, junior quarterback Jacob Palish made a major splash, marshalling the Ranger offense to 32:19 of possession time, a 6-of-13 conversion rate on third downs and 178 all-purpose yardage in the triumph over Arlington Bowie. Jesuit's first drive took 4:58 off of the first quarter clock, spanned 80 yards on nine plays while resulting in a momentum-establishing opening touchdown. In total, the Rangers embarked upon five drives that lasted longer than 3:30, including a 12-play, 78-yard, 5:41 drive that spanned two quarters and resulted in the squad's second touchdown of the evening.
Ranger Defenders Provide Pressure: The Arlington Bowie offense was unable to muster positive net yardage until their third offensive drive, ending the half with 18 net yards of offense. One key component of Bowie's inability to move the ball was the Jesuit defense, which provided pressure on the Volunteer quarterback while also stopping the Bowie aerial attack. In total, the Rangers were credited with five pass breakups, including four by Nate Thompson. Bowie only had one drive with more than five plays, a drive that ultimately ended in negative yardage after a bad punt nearly cost the Volunteers a safety.
Jesuit Disciplined in Season Opener: One component of the Jesuit win over Bowie that could be easily overlooked is the Volunteer's misfortune of impeding their own progress through penalties. Jesuit only committed a pair of infractions last Friday, resulting in 14 penalty yards, compared to 10 penalties on Arlington Bowie, which resulted in 93 total yards and nearly equaled the Volunteers net yardage on the evening.
Panthers Prep for Friday: Plano East opened the season with a 36-14 triumph over Lake Highlands, using a 16-point second quarter to start the season 1-0. Quarterback Miklo Smalls completed 12-of-18 passes for 117 yards, with the run-heavy Plano East offense additionally racing for 195 yards on the ground. Desmond Bowden did a majority of the work in the Panther backfield, rushing 15 times for 63 yards, as Trey Hunter averaged 19.33 yards per carry, finishing with 58 yards and a touchdown. The Plano East defense also made a strong debut, forcing three fumbles despite only recovering one and holding Lake Highlands to a paltry 2.75 yards per carry on 28 rushes.
Up Next: The Rangers return home on Sept. 11 to battle brother school Strake Jesuit in a 7 p.m. contest at Postell Stadium. Jesuit is 4-0 against Strake under the leadership of Coach Hickman, including a 59-35 win over the Crusaders in last season's clash, which took place in Houston.
