Griffin Scott's go-ahead goal with five minutes remaining in regulation brought the Rangers back from a one-goal, first half deficit for a 2-1, University Interscholastic League (UIL) District 9-6A opening win over Sunset on Tuesday at Postell Stadium.
Scott attempted a corner from the far side that curled its way into the net in the waning moments of the contest, helping the Rangers (5-2-1, 1-0-0 UIL) start district play with a critical home win. Fellow fourth year
Liam Finn scored his second goal of the season off of an assist by classmate
Adam Garcia to tie the game midway through the second half.
Sunset scored the opening goal with under two minutes remaining in first to take 1-0 halftime, but the Blue and Gold seized momentum early in the second half, developing several quality chances before Finn's strike tied the mid-week clash. Junior goalkeeper
Luke Ostrander kept the Rangers within striking distance after Finn's game-tying tally, punching a dangerous, lofting free kick by Sunset back towards the midfield line.
Scott sent a shot wide in the 65th minute, beginning a late push by the Rangers that culminated with Scott's goal in the 75th minute. After scoring the go-ahead goal, Ostrander made a late save with 2:05 remaining to keep the lead intact, and the Rangers were able to hold off a late rush by the Bison en route to the victory.
Jesuit Dallas will next compete against Skyline at Postell Stadium on Friday, Jan. 29 at 7:30 p.m.
