Overtime Tallies Send No. 6 Rangers to UIL Area Round

Senior Patrick Howell's go-ahead header with nine minutes remaining in the second overtime period propelled the No. 6 Jesuit Dallas Rangers, according to TopDrawerSoccer.com, to a 3-1 win in the University Interscholastic League (UIL) Bi-District Round on Saturday afternoon at Richardson High School.

Jesuit Dallas (15-2-5) saw three different players find the back of the net, including junior Ethan Moore, who opened the afternoon's scoring with a penalty kick in the final minute of the first half, and senior Nathan Corey, who added a critical insurance goal in the waning moments of overtime.

The Ranger defense held firm, anchored by the goalkeeper tandem of junior Luke Ostrander and sophomore Joseph Banul. Jesuit Dallas has yet to concede more than one goal to a single opponent this season, and improved its unbeaten streak to 15 games on Saturday.

In the opening stanza, both teams exchanged possessions, with Jesuit procuring several quality chances . Richardson sent a shot that clanged off the crossbar, setting the stage for Moore's penalty chance. Fouled inside the box in the waning moment of the first half, Moore fired the penalty to the left side of the net, past the outstretched hand of the Eagles goalkeeper to send Jesuit to a 1-0 lead at the break.

Richardson equalized the playoff game with 11 minutes remaining in regulation, sending the game into overtime. After the first of two 10-minute overtime periods ended without a goal scored by either team, Howell found the back of the net on a corner kick, heading in a ball from fellow classmate and Washington & Lee commit Griffin Scott to put the Blue and Gold back in the lead. With two minutes remaining in overtime, Corey scored his first goal of the season, giving the Rangers a two-goal lead.

Winning its first UIL Bi-District Championship since the 2013 season, the Rangers will next battle North Garland of District 11-6A on Friday, Apr. 1 at Homer B. Johnson Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
