A towering home run by senior
Kyle Muller sparked a nine-run third inning to help the Rangers to a 12-1 win over Bishop Lynch to start the squad's second day at the 2016 Jesuit Dallas Baseball Classic at Wright Field. The Rangers would close Friday with a 9-9 tie against Lovejoy, called due to the time limit after the sixth inning.
The Rangers (6-2-1) earned their second consecutive mercy rule win with 12 runs on eight hits, propelled by six members of the Jesuit Dallas lineup that recorded hits. Senior
Bryce Bonner went 2-for-2 with a pair of runs driven in, while classmate
Matt Horvath scattered a pair of base hits for the Blue and Gold. Muller and junior J.T. Mix crossed home plate twice and junior J.J. Montenegro earned his first win of the year with a complete game two-hitter, striking out seven batters. Against Lovejoy, Muller alongside seniors
Connor Lynch and
Thomas Jordan drove in a pair of runs each, while junior
Will Guzman went 3-for-3 with two runs.
A double to right center by Bonner started the scoring, plating Mix and senior
Pete Hamrick to give the home team an early, two-run lead. After Bishop Lynch (5-9) plated its first run in the second, Muller took a 1-0 fastball over the left field fence and into the parking lot, opening the floodgates for a nine-run, five-hit inning to put the home team ahead with a dominant, 11-1 lead.
Junior
Mark Ready singled to left to score junior
Jared Bond, while a single up the middle by Horvath scored senior
Chris Campagna. Hamrick plated Horvath with an RBI groundout before junior
Jake Ryan scored senior
Jared Kengott with a sacrifice fly to right field. A two-run error ended the third-inning scoring, and fourth
Thomas Jordan crossed the plate on a wild pitch in the fourth for the Rangers' final run of the game.
Against Lovejoy, Jesuit responded to a two-run first by the Leopards with four runs in the bottom of the frame. Lovejoy retook the lead with a four-run, four-hit second inning, but Jesuit responded again with two runs in the third. Senior
Thomas Jordan forced a bases loaded walk to bring the Rangers to within one before a squeeze bunt by Hamrick allowed Bond to cross the plate to tie the game once again. Jesuit took the lead in the fourth when Jordan was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded before a wild pitch scored bond to spot the home team an 8-6 advantage headed into the fifth.
After Lovejoy tied the contest in the top of the frame, taking a lead on a Jesuit throwing error in the sixth. With the time limit looming, Lynch walked with one out to put the tying run aboard. Pinch runner Kengott scored the tying run when Lovejoy converted an error on the back end of a 6-4-3 double play, salvaging a tie for the Rangers as the game was called due to the time limit.
Jesuit Dallas will begin the final day of the classic with a 1:30 p.m. bout against Austin Westlake before closing the tournament at 4 p.m. against Rockwall.
