Jesuit Dallas Baseball Game Notes
Weekend Video Preview with Head Coach Brian Jones
No. 11 Rangers Silence Stallions: Two impressive pitching performances provided Jesuit Dallas a ticket to the University Interscholastic League (UIL) 6A Baseball State Championship Area Round after a two-game sweep of the North Mesquite Stallions last weekend. The Rangers opened the series with a 10-0, run-rule victory on May 6, lifted by a pair of two-RBI singles from junior JT Mix and senior Connor Lynch. In addition, junior pitcher Jacob Palisch held the Stallions to two hits, striking out eight. Jesuit set a new season-high with six stolen bases, three of which were recorded by senior Kyle Muller, who followed his Friday success with a no-hitter on Saturday, striking out 15 and launching a mammoth, two-run home run in the first, in an 8-0 Ranger victory. Muller threw his second no-hitter of the year, matching his second-highest single game strikeout total on the season. Senior Jared Bond picked up his fifth home run on the year with an inside-the-park four-bagger to help increase the Jesuit advantage.
Muller Mayhem: University of Texas commit Kyle Muller has continued to gain local and national media attention during his unprecedented 2016 season. Leading the team with a .442 batting average, Muller increased his home run total on the year to 15 with a two-run shot in the first inning of Saturday's game against North Mesquite. In addition to his ability from the plate, Muller reduced his earned run average to a microscopic 0.13 after Saturday's no-hitter. The senior earned Dallas Morning News Player of the Week honors for the second time this year, the only player in the metroplex to earn the honor twice during the 2016 campaign.
Firing on All Cylinders: The Rangers are currently out-hitting opponents, .332-.207, combining for a .485 team slugging percentage and eye-raising .449 team on-base average. Converting 87.4 percent of stolen base attempts on the year, Jesuit's overall offense has produced eight runs per game throughout the squad's 27-win season. On the mound, Ranger pitchers are striking out 7.65 batters per game, holding opposing hitters to a .207 batting average in 2016. In addition, the Jesuit arms have come through in the clutch on several occasions, with opposing batters hitting .208 (54-260) with two outs and 4-of 16 with the bases loaded.
Magic Numbers: Jesuit Dallas is 17-1-1 on the year, earning a 13-0-1 record when at least a single home run is recorded by a Jesuit batter. Early offense has been the key for Jesuit, with the Rangers combining for a 153-37 run advantage in the first through third innings this year. The scales tip favorably in Jesuit's favor after the fourth, with the squad holding a 25-1 mark during the 2016 season when leading after four.
Last Time They Met: Jesuit Dallas faced Belton on Mar 12, picking up a 2-0, shutout win over the Tigers. The second of Jesuit's 14 shutouts this year, the win was earned by junior Heath Van Kirk, who four-hit the Tigers while striking out nine. Senior Jared Bond did the damage offensively, driving in both Jesuit runs while going 1-of-2 from the plate. Jesuit's runs were scored by senior Kyle Muller and junior pinch runner Alex Lengyel. Belton's Hobey Hiland led the squad with two hits, with Trey Bell and Trent Stafford also recording base hits off of Van Kirk, who threw a complete game shutout.
