Baseball
The No. 12 Jesuit Dallas baseball squad will open the University Interscholastic League (UIL) 6A State Tournament on Friday evening, squaring off against the North Mesquite Stallions from UIL District 10-6A.Â
Clinching the program's seventh consecutive UIL 9-6A District Championship last week, the Rangers will enter the postseason with a 25-5-2 overall record, led by an impressive balance of offense and pitching. Jesuit Dallas owns a .331 team batting average and 2.22 team earned run average, with the squad's primary three starters, senior
Kyle Muller, juniors
Jacob Palisch and
JJ Montenegro, combining for a 1.14 ERA.
Lacrosse
Ranked No. 2 in the state, the Ranger lacrosse squad will travel to Conroe, Texas for the Texas High School Lacrosse League (THSLL) Super Regionals, set to battle either No. 8 Lake Travis or No. 17 Kincaid pending a 7 p.m. result on Saturday evening. Jesuit Dallas did not play either of its potential opponents throughout the season, but the possibility looms for the squad to rematch against either South top-seed Woodlands, currently ranked fourth in the state, or No. 3 Episcopal in the THSLL State Championship semifinal, scheduled for Saturday, May 14.
Jesuit Dallas finished the season with a 16-2 record, with the team's two losses suffered against nationally-ranked No. 3 Gonzaga (D.C.) and Texas top-ranked Highland Park. The Rangers ended the season on a three-game winning streak, outscoring opponents, 35-12, closing out the year unbeaten at home with a 9-0 record.
Â
"I think this year the upperclassmen have done a very good job leading this team," commented Jesuit Dallas head coach
Chris Surran. "The team's work ethic in the off-season was strong and the on field execution has been solid in all phases during the season. This team also plays with tremendous energy and passion. "
Lake Travis currently holds a 15-3 record, averaging 13.3 goals per game, while Kincaid finished the season 3-3 over its final six games of the year to post an 11-8 overall record, going 4-5 against common opponents with Jesuit, including a 12-4 loss to St. Mark's, a team that the Rangers upended, 13-7, on Apr. 1.
Junior
Daniel Burnum currently leads the team in scoring with 26 goals on the year, while sophomore
David Sprock is close behind with 23 tallies in 2016. Jesuit Dallas boasts a lineup that includes 18 different goal scorers and three members with 20 or more goals, including senior
Garrett Munck, a Skidmore College commit who has 21 goals this season. Junior
Luke Millican enters the postseason assured of a 100-save season, while fourth year University of Michigan commit
John Michael Priddy looks to lead the Rangers ground game, entering Saturday with a squad-high 78 ground balls.
"At the end of the day, we need to stay poised, out ground ball our opponent, shoot well and execute," concluded Surran. "Both Kinkaid and Lake Travis are very good lacrosse teams so we will need to play with great energy to advance."
The Rangers will play at 3 p.m. on Sunday. Follow Jesuit Lacrosse on Twitter for game updates on Sunday.
Crew
Aiming to continue the momentum from an incredible spring season, Jesuit Dallas Crew begins its postseason charge at the USRowing Central Youth Championships on Saturday in Oklahoma City.
The varsity 8+ looks to remain unbeaten in the spring, taking its newly dedicated racing shell to the Oklahoma River for an exciting slate of competition. Most recently, the varsity 8 won the Tulsa Route 66 Regatta after posting victories at the St. Andrews Invitational and Fifth Annual Manny Flick Regattas in Mid-April, tacking on wins at the Oklahoma City Invitational, which took place on the Oklahoma River on Mar. 19.
"The reason for this season's success is culture and training. Â The team's culture really trumps everything and it is a culture of hard work, accountability, and constant competitiveness," commented Jesuit Dallas head coach
John Fife. Â "This culture is really fostered by the seniors and the whole team has bought in. Â Our training is also rigorous as anyone will tell you. Â But, we realize that it is all the grueling hard work we do when no one is there to watch that results in the successes people see in the light."
In total, the Rangers will participate in 14 events throughout the two-day regatta, with the varsity 8+ participating in a time trial at 11:36 a.m. on Saturday. The lightweight 4+ is the first to compete, opening the morning at 8:20 a.m., with the lightweight 8+ and youth 4+ set to compete at 10:08 a.m. and 11:05 a.m., respectively.
"The keys to success now are making sure we race like we have trained, make sure everyone is fueling their bodies properly, resting and recovering from each workout. Â Just like taking an exam, our guys have studied the material over and over, now they just need to execute on test (race) day."
