The Jesuit Dallas varsity tennis squad closed the fall season with an emphatic, 5-2 win over Coppell on Tuesday, Nov. 7 at The Hockaday School. Sweeping their way through singles competition, the Rangers earn a key win towards establishing momentum for the spring championship season.
Â
"All these guys having been playing a great deal of tennis between USTA tournaments and High School tennis so I expected the level of play to be high and I wasn't disappointed," commented Jesuit Dallas tennis head coach
Paul McDaniel. "The matches were close and the tennis was great."
Â
Coppell kicked off the match by winning two of three doubles matches to take an early lead, but a 6-2, 6-3 win by the top-flight doubles team of senior
John Lindberg and freshman Max Platt put Jesuit Dallas on the board. Sophomore Reid Staples began the comeback with a 6-3, 5-7, 7-6 win at top-flight singles, followed by a huge 6-2, 6-7, 7-6 victory by senior
Nico Elizondo at No. 2 singles.
Â
"We're still working out where everyone is going to play in the spring season. Platt & Lindberg looked good. This was the first real test for them since Highland Park," added assistant coach
Andy Civello '97. I felt
Nico Elizondo and Reid Staples really looked focused and strong.Â
Marcelo Pier is playing the best tennis of his career right now."
Â
Once the Rangers secured the lead, the Blue and Gold raced to the victory with a 6-1, 6-1 triumph at third-flight singles by senior
Marcelo Pier and a 6-1, 6-2 win from junior Cole Clement at No. 4 singles.
Â
Jesuit Dallas will return to action in early January, when the Rangers will attempt to capture the 12th UIL District Championship in program history.
