Senior goalkeeper
Luke Ostrander made an eyebrow-raising 15 saves in goal, allowing an early first half goal from classmate
Chase Burciaga to stand in a 1-0, Jesuit Dallas victory over University Interscholastic League (UIL) District 9-6A rival and state-ranked No. 4 Coppell on Friday evening at Buddy Echols Field.
Â
Ostrander made 11 stops in the first half and four in the second stanza, vaulting Jesuit (10-2-1, 7-0-1 UIL 9-6A) into sole possession of first place with its third consecutive shutout. The Rangers have not yielded a goal to an opponent in over 245 minutes of game time, allowing their last tally in the waning moments of a 4-2 win over Lake Highlands on Feb. 8.
Â
Burciaga scored his fourth goal of the year in the 13th minute of the first half, collecting a long throw-in from senior
Jonah Brunel. Deflecting off of junior
Christian Lerma and senior
Will Kennard, Burciaga was able to steady the loose ball long enough to send a shot that careened off the near post and across the goal line.
Â
Once Jesuit took the lead, the focus turned to the Ranger defense. Jesuit's backline, including seniors
Alex Garcia,
James LaRoe,
David Morgado, Brunel and junior
Andrew Gilchrist, stood tall throughout the first half, disrupting the Cowboys and forcing long-distance shots from the reigning UIL 6A State Champions.
Â
Over the final 15 minutes of the first half, Coppell orchestrated a determined attempt for the equalizer, including a shot that got past Ostrander but was saved off of the line by senior
Mateo Means.
Ostrander would make six of his 15 saves in the final 13:18 of the first half, including a stop with two second remaining before halftime to send the Rangers into the break with the lead.
Â
Burciaga placed a great attempt on target 30 seconds into the second half that was saved, and the Jesuit defense once again maintained control of the game, holding Coppell (9-2-1, 6-1-1) to only eight total shots in the second half, including four on target. Ostrander converted all four saves, including his final stop with 35 seconds remaining in the game, to clinch the momentous district win for the Rangers.
Â
Jesuit, ranked No. 13 in the state according to last Monday's
TopDrawerSoccer rankings, will return to Postell Stadium on Tuesday, Feb. 21 to host Richardson. The Rangers upended the Eagles, 3-0, in the first meeting of the season between the two squads on Jan. 27. Kickoff for the Tuesday evening contest is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
