Lerma Nets Two Goals in Comeback Win Over Skyline

Jesuit remained unbeaten in University Interscholastic League (UIL) District 9-6A play, as two goals by junior Christian Lerma brought Jesuit back from a halftime deficit to defeat Skyline, 2-1, on Friday, Feb. 24 at Forester Stadium.

Lerma scored in the 58th and 73rd minute to lead Jesuit (12-2-1, 9-0-1) past the Raiders (5-9-1, 4-6-1), keeping the Rangers in sole possession of first place in UIL District 9-6A. Senior Will Kennard assisted on Lerma's game-winner, while fellow fourth year Luke Ostrander made five saves, including four stops in the second half, to keep Jesuit unbeaten in district.

After a scoreless first half, the Rangers ramped up the pressure in the second half, launching 10 shots against the Raiders. Skyline developed quality chances early, including a breakaway on goal in the 12th minute that senior Alex Garcia turned aside, but in total the Raiders attempted eight shots, three of which were saved by Ostrander, finally breaking through with 27 seconds remaining in the half. After a long cross by the Raiders, a loose ball was collected in the six-yard box and dribbled into an open goal to send Skyline into the break leading, 1-0.

Jesuit turned the tables on Skyline in the second half, tying the contest with 22:53 left in the second stanza with a goal from Lerma. The junior dribbled past multiple defenders, sending a rocket from the far left side of the six-yard box, which deflected off of a Skyline defender into the goal.

Lerma continued to get past the Raider defense, posting Jesuit's next three shots and finally breaking through in the 73rd minute. Kennard slotted the ball through the defense to Lerma, who was running clear. The junior beat the Skyline keeper from 10 yards out to give Jesuit the lead.

Ostrander stood tall down the stretch to keep the lead intact, making a pair of saves over the final six minutes to secure the win. With the victory, Jesuit remains one game ahead of Coppell for the district lead heading into the final two weeks of district play.

The Rangers aim to stay unbeaten in district and take one step closer to their ninth UIL District Championship on Tuesday, when Jesuit travels to Richardson for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff against J.J. Pearce.
