The spring playoff season is set to arrive to the Jesuit Dallas campus on Tuesday, May 2, when the Jesuit Dallas lacrosse team hosts the Coppell Cowboys in the first round of the Texas High School Lacrosse League (THSLL) State Tournament at 7:30 p.m. from Postell Stadium. The Jesuit baseball team enters the University Interscholastic League (UIL) 6A Baseball Tournament on Thursday, May 4 at 7 p.m. against Sachse in Garland, Texas, returning home to battle the Mustangs on Friday, May 5 at Wright Field.
Â
Finishing the regular season with a 10-4 record, Jesuit lacrosse hopes to replicate the success found in a 6-4 win over the Cowboys on April 7, part of a key, five-game winning streak that vaulted the Rangers to the No. 3 seed in the THSLL North Division.
Â
The Rangers trailed Coppell, 4-3, heading into the fourth quarter, but goals by
Daniel Burnum,
Trey Wiederecht and
David Sprock proved to be the difference. Jesuit netminder
William Moran made eight saves for the Blue and Gold en route to the win, while
Jack Tabor and
Matthew Priddy secured a team-high six groundballs each. Coppell scored four goals on 19 shots, including 12 shots on cage, but Jesuit swept faceoffs, 4-0, in the fourth quarter to establish the pace of play in their favor.
Â
Coppell (11-7) ended the season on a three-game winning streak to rebound from a five-game skid which included the loss to the Rangers. The Cowboys defeated Keller, 15-4 and Southlake Carroll, 6-5 before a 14-7 win over Allen finished the team's run into the postseason.
Â
On Thursday, the 21-11 Rangers will face off against the 17-11 Mustangs, who finished second in District 10-6A with a 9-3 league record. Jesuit enters the playoffs on a seven-game winning streak while the Mustangs defeated Naaman Forest and South Garland to close the regular season. Jesuit bats have anchored the team during their recent winning streak, averaging seven runs per game while batting .371 as a team.
Â
The Ranger pitching staff has also excelled, allowing only three earned runs over seven games and recording a 0.45 team earned run average. The Mustangs boast a slew of quality arms, including 2016 second-team all-district pick Justin Lewis, who threw 6.1 innings and struck out eight to push Sachse past Naaman forest. Â
Â
Tickets for both the lacrosse and baseball home games will cost $5 for adults and $3 for students. No athletic passes will be honored at the gate, per UIL and THSLL regulations. In addition, JesuitRangers.org will provide a free live video stream of Tuesday's lacrosse game, and a free audio stream of Friday's baseball game to accompany live statistics for games one and three of the team's UIL Bi-District battle with the Mustangs.
