Chris Muller '14, a former Jesuit Dallas baseball student-athlete who competed at Paris Junior College and University of Texas - San Antonio, was drafted by Tampa Bay in the 17th round and 499th pick of the Major League Baseball (MLB) Amateur Draft, signing with the Rays on Monday, June 19.
Â
Debuting on the UTSA roster this season after two years at PJC, Muller made an immediate impact for the Roadrunners, posting a team-low 1.72 earned run average while finishing second on the team with 44 strikeouts. His time at Paris Junior College saw the former Ranger start 29 games, secure eight wins and strike out 115 batters for the Dragons. At Jesuit Dallas, Muller was a member of two district championship-winning programs, including a 25-win team during his senior season.
Â
Muller joins a recent influx of Rangers selected in the MLB Amateur Draft, a list which includes Chris' brother Kyle, who was drafted in the second round by the Atlanta Braves last season, spending the summer in the Gulf Coast League. Muller becomes the fourth Ranger to be drafted by a MLB team since 2010, joining Kyle, Josh Bell '11 (Pittsburgh Pirates) and Jacques De Gruy '10 (Philadelphia Phillies).
Â
Chris becomes the first Jesuit Dallas alum to be drafted by an American League team since 2016 Jesuit Dallas Hall of Fame inductee Kevin Hart, who was drafted by Baltimore before making his MLB debut for the Chicago Cubs in 2007. Muller is the 26th Jesuit Dallas student athlete to sign a professional contract.
