Playoff Hopes Remain Intact After Victory Over Lake Highlands

An inspired Jesuit Dallas soccer club kept its playoff aspirations alive with a 3-1 road win over Lake Highlands on Friday evening at Wildcat-Ram Stadium. Jesuit Dallas will head into the week-long spring break bye with two road contests on the horizon and a chance to advance to the University Interscholastic League (UIL) 6A State Playoffs.

Senior Andrew Gilchrist tallied a pair of goals for Jesuit Dallas, scoring goals in the first and second half to put the Rangers in position for a critical road win. Junior Diego Sierra tacked on his fifth goal of the season in the 78th minute, converting a penalty kick after senior Alex Reznicek drew a foul in the box. Gilchrist, Reznicek and Sierra enter the final week of the season tied for the team lead with five goals apiece.

In the opening stanza, junior varsity call-up Renin Seely pushed a through ball to a charging Gilchrist, who laced a low-liner from the top of the box into the lower right corner for the game-opening score. Junior Connor Tullis shut out the Wildcats in the first half to send the Blue and Gold into the break with a one goal lead.

The Wildcats tied the game in the 67th minute, working their way past the Jesuit Dallas defense to earn a one-on-one chance against senior goalkeeper Joe Banul. After allowing the equalizer, the Rangers ramped up the pressure, almost taking the lead on a shot by senior Alexei Ramirez that ricocheted off the crossbar in the 69th minute.

Gilchrist scored the go-ahead goal when Ramirez got a ball through the Lake Highlands defense, finding the senior on a cross to the far post. Gilchrist headed in the goal to put the Rangers back in front. Sierra tacked on the critical insurance goal in the last 90 seconds of the bout on a low line drive that beat the keeper to the left side of the net.

Jesuit Dallas will travel down the road to Alfred J. Loos Stadium on Tuesday, Mar. 20 to take on W.T. White before closing the regular season on Friday, Mar. 23 against Berkner. Kickoff between the Rangers and Longhorns is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
