Tennis Team Excels During Spring Season

The Jesuit Dallas tennis team excelled during the early portion of the spring season, securing a trio of dual match victories while adding several strong performances in tournament play. The Rangers finished in third place at the Universal Tennis Rating (UTA) National High School Tennis Tournament, excelling in the program's first appearance at the national showcase in Waco, Texas.
 
Senior Reid Staples ran through the Super Bowl Invitational Field, winning five straight matches en route to the tournament championship. The Bowdoin College commit opened his tournament run with a clean sweep over Srikar Mangalapalli from Frisco Heritage, moving to the second round with a 6-0, 6-0 first round win.
 
A 6-2, 6-1 win over Coppell's Arjun Arunachalam and a 6-1, 6-1 tournament semifinal win put Staples in the final against Coppell's Matthew Abbey. A hard-fought, 6-4, 7-6, two-set win to clinch the tournament title, clinching the championship with a 7-3 decision in the tiebreaker.
 
Juniors Eli Gan-Dy and Max Platt won the doubles final at the Grapevine Ice Bowl Tournament, capturing the tournament title with a 7-6, 6-2 decision over Coppell. Freshman Bennett Barron added his first career tournament title in the singles "B" division. Barron won the championship in a super tiebreaker, scoring a 6-2, 4-6, 10-3 win for Jesuit's second championship of the tournament.
 
Platt and Gan-Dy won their second tournament championship of the spring at the Flower Mound Invitational on Feb. 21, winning the tournament in an all-Jesuit final over the team of Cole and Darlak. Barron captured his second tournament title of the season as Staples finished as the runner-up in the top singles division.
 
At the UTR Tournament, the Rangers went 2-1 in dual match play, upending Abilene Wylie and San Antonio Johnson for a strong showing in an eye-opening field which included several state championship hopefuls. Jesuit's singles contingent performed well in the first round against Abilene Wylie, picking up a 7-2 win over the Bulldogs to advance to the consolation semifinals. In singles competition, junior Max Platt scored a 6-0, 6-1 win before senior Matthew Cole captured a 6-1, 5-2 win to give Jesuit an early 2-0 lead.
 
Junior Eli Gan-dy won, 6-2, 6-1, junior Jake Darlak added a 6-2, 6-1 victory and freshman Bennett Barron closed the run with a 6-2, 6-3 victory. Gan-dy and Platt secured an 8-2 win in a doubles as Darlak and Cole's 9-7 decision wrapped up Jesuit's scoring.
 
Platt kept his momentum in the tournament semifinal against A&M Consolidated with a 6-2, 6-3 win as Darlak fought his way back from a 6-1 loss in the first set to win 1-6, 6-3, 10-6 for the second of three points for Jesuit in the singles bracket. Despite an 8-3 win in doubles by Gan-Dy and Platt, A&M Consolidated won the final two doubles matches to advance with a 5-4 win over the Rangers.
 
Jesuit clinched third place with a 5-2 victory over San Antonio Johnson. Platt, Cole and Barron won singles matches before the Rangers wrapped their tournament run with a pair of tiebreaker wins at doubles. Gan-Dy and Platt secured a 7-1 win in the extra session en route to an 8-7 win before Cole and Darlak tacked on a 7-3 tiebreaker win to score the 8-7 decision.
 
In addition to the Rangers' tournament success, Jesuit followed a setback against Nolan Catholic on Jan. 23 with a 5-2 win over Trinity Christian Acad. On Jan. 30, a 10-3 win over Liberty Christian on Feb. 4 and a 5-1 victory on Mar. 5 against ESD. Junior Connor Bryant and Darlak won single matches before the top-flight doubles team of junior Diego Elizondo and junior Jonathan Ardoin picked up a 6-0, 6-1 win to kickstart doubles. Junior Calum Taylor and sophomore Po-Hsu Chen added two wins, scoring a 6-0, 6-1 victory before finishing the dual meet with an additional 6-2 decision.
