A stout and unrelenting defense forced 25 turnovers and held Mesquite to a 26.7 percent clip from three-point range as the Rangers opened the 2022-23 home slate with a 60-37 win on Tuesday at Walsh Gym. Jesuit outscored Mesquite, 22-5 in the third quarter to pull away from the Skeeters en route to securing their second straight win and second win of the season.
Senior Dylan Gibbons pieced together a strong performance, recording six points, five rebounds, a team-high six assists and a team-leading five steals. Sophomore Caleb Steger, notched 15 points on 4-of-7 shooting from three-point range to lead the team in scoring.
Jesuit hit seven three pointers and 50 percent (23-of-46) from the field, with junior Will Bronson Shooting 5-of-7 from the floor to finish the game with 11 points. Seniors Tai Kryger and Charlie Needham scored nine points apiece for the Blue and Gold. Jesuit out-rebounded Mesquite, 31-18, scored 31 points off of turnovers, and racked up 32 points in the paint.
The Rangers will next head to Coppell for a busy week of non-district action. Competing in the Coppell Tip-Off Tournament, Jesuit will open the five-game schedule on Thursday with showdowns against L.D. Bell (9 a.m.) and Byron Nelson (3 p.m.). Friday will see the Rangers face off against Coppell (9 a.m.) and Tyler Legacy (3 p.m.) before the tournament concludes with pool play finals on Saturday afternoon.
