Junior goalkeeper
Cole Hines made back-to-back saves in penalties, setting the stage for senior
Julian McDoniel to fire home the game-clinching fourth penalty for Jesuit as the Rangers upended District 8-6A champion Arlington Martin on Thursday in the University Interscholastic League (UIL) Region I-6A Bi-District round at Mustang-Panther Stadium in Grapevine.
Junior
Josh Roppolo scored his 10th goal of the season early in the matchup, sending a feed from McDoniel over the Warriors' keeper to give the Rangers a 1-0 lead in the seventh minute. Hines recorded a pair of saves in the opening half as Martin pushed the pace in the opening half, taking eight shots and drawing 10 fouls. Martin would tie the game in the 50th minute, but the Rangers dictated the pace throughout the second half with nine shots. In the first overtime, Jesuit out-shot Martin, 3-2, but a great chance by the Warriors was stopped by sophomore
Matthew Sucato, whose defensive save kept the game tied heading into the second overtime.
Senior Arnold Perez and sophomore Jack Bradshaw scored the first two penalty attempts for the Rangers in the shootout, as Hines gave Jesuit the lead with a stop on Martin's second shootout try. After senior
Brendan Shorey hit the net on Jesuit's third attempt, Hines scored another save on the Warriors' third shot to put the Rangers in position to clinch the win. McDoniel ripped the final shot past the Warriors' goalkeeper to clinch the victory for Jesuit.
The Rangers will next take on either Prosper or Lewisville in the UIL Area Round. The Eagles and Farmers will battle on Friday at The Colony H.S. at 7:30 p.m.
