Rangers Score Season-Opening Win Over Hebron: Jesuit Dallas scored a win in its season opener for the second consecutive year with a 38-7 win over Hebron. The Rangers controlled the pace of the contest from the outset, as senior Ford Buckner recorded a sack on the first play from scrimmage, and Jesuit secured an early, 14-0 lead with touchdowns on its first two drives. Buckner would ultimately earn Dallas Morning News Defensive Honorable Mention honors after securing seven tackles, two tackles for loss and a sack.
Big Play Penchant: The Rangers opened the 2022 season with a convincing display of offensive power, as the Blue and Gold recorded four plays of 25 yards or longer throughout the contest. Jesuit's first long play of the game was a 60-yard catch-and-run pass from senior Charlie Schmidt to senior Jake Musso, which Musso took into the end zone for a touchdown. Schmidt connected with junior Cooper Cutler for a 34-yard pass on the ensuing drive, setting up another touchdown on a one-yard touchdown plunge from Musso. Senior Reed Pfaffenberger registered the longest rush of the game on a 52-yard scamper in the second quarter.
Defense Shines in Season Opener: Jesuit's defense made a statement in the first game of the new season, as senior leadership paved the road for a strong day on the gridiron. Senior captain Will Sahadevan led the team with eight tackles on the night and a pass breakup, while senior captain Luke Buckner secured Dallas Morning News Defensive Honorable Mention Plaudits with seven tackles, two tackles for loss and a sack. Senior Luke Selner and junior Grayson Wombacher recorded six stops each, junior Tristen Bird scored five tackles and assisted on a six-yard tackle for loss, and the trio of seniors Roark Holman, Blake Miller and junior Chris Simington recorded four tackles apiece.
What's On the Line Tonight: Jesuit is looking for its first 2-0 start since 2012, a season in which the Rangers opened the season in Dublin, Ireland with a last-second, 30-29 win over Wilmette Loyola, then followed up the win with a 34-21 victory over Fossil Ridge. The Rangers opened the year with a win for the fourth time since 2012 following Friday's victory.
Up Next: The Rangers will enter district play on Friday, Sept. 9 against J.J. Pearce, a matchup that will take place at Ranger Stadium. Jesuit has won eight straight games at home heading into the showdown against the Mustangs, and have only allowed seven points over the last four regular season contests at Ranger Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. on Sept. 9. District 7-6A will see Highland Park, Irving ISD (Irving, MacArthur, Nimitz), Jesuit and Richardson ISD (Berkner, J.J. Pearce, Lake Highlands, Richardson) battle it out for the four playoff spots in the UIL 6A Football Tournament
Game Preview - Rockwall
Rockwall Sets the Tone Against Cedar Hill: Rockwall entered the 2022 season with high expectations, and took the first major step towards that goal with a convincing, 34-12 win over Cedar Hill on Saturday. Quarterback Mason Marshall took over following an early game injury to starter Lake Bennett, and controlled the pace of the game with three rushing touchdowns, 78 yards on 16 carries and 78 passing yards on 8-of-15 completions. Parker Williams added a rushing touchdown, closing out the bout with 44 yards on 11 carries. Rockwall opened the game by scoring on its first five offensive drives, three via touchdown and two via field goal, and took a 27-6 lead into halftime.
Players to Watch: Wide receiver Noble Johnson enters the 2022 season as a four-star Clemson recruit who is the No. 37 wide receiver in Texas and the No. 52 overall prospect in the state. On Saturday against Cedar Hill, Johnson caught a team-high five receptions for 74 yards.
Program History: Rockwall is three years removed from a state semifinal appearance, as the Yellow Jackets reached the final four with a run through Region II, Division I that included wins over Harker Heights (47-7), Allen (60-59), Klein Oak (37-27) and Prosper (59-42) before a setback to Duncanville (56-14). Last season, Rockwall advanced to the area round with a 55-14 win over North Garland, but saw its season end with a 49-28 loss to DeSoto. Rockwall has qualified for the postseason in nine consecutive sentences.
Brooks Continues Strong Start: Head Coach Trey Brooks enters his third season at the helm of the Rockwall football program, earning the promotion in 2020 after former head coach and current Highland Park Athletic Director Rodney Webb left the post to accept the head job at Denton Guyer. Over the last three seasons, Brooks has amassed a 20-5 record incluing Saturday's win over Cedar HIll.
