Basketball Moves to 2-0 in District Following Road Win Over Irving

Senior Tre Mergerson led all scorers with 18 points, helping Jesuit Dallas upend Irving, 69-37, on Tuesday at Irving H.S. The win moves the Rangers to 2-0 in District 7-6A ahead of a showdown against reigning UIL 6A state champion Lake Highlands on Friday at Walsh Gym.

Mergerson went 6-of-10 from the field, 6-of-8 from the free-throw line and tacked on a team-leading nine rebounds to lead the team. Junior Michael Grant scored 17 points and senior Alec Piotrowski added 12 points to the Jesuit Dallas effort, hitting 4-of-7 shots from three-point range. Senior Hank Gramlich scored eight points, senior Justin Kemp picked up six points, junior Charlie Peters scored four points, and the scoring column was completed by two points apiece from junior Ethan Mahowald and sophomore Cade Kirby.

Jesuit Dallas dominated in the paint, out-scoring the Tigers, 42-14. The Rangers finished the contest with a 36-23 rebounding advantage, and scored 14 points off of 14 Irving turnovers. 

The Rangers will next match up against Lake Highlands, who enter the matchup with a 2-1 mark in district. The Wildcats defeated MacArthur, 61-50, on Dec. 5, lost to Highland Mark, 44-40, on Dec. 8 and most recently upended Berkner, 74-66, on Dec. 12. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. at Walsh Gym.
