Persistant Paint Presence Powers Rangers Past Irving

Jesuit Dallas scored 48 points in the paint, secured 17 offensive rebounds and shot 55.4 percent from the floor, racing past Irving en route to a 73-56 win on Jan. 19 at Walsh Gym. The victory improves Jesuit's district record to 8-2 as the team reaches the final six-game stretch of district play.

Junior Caleb Steger was a force for the Rangers, converting 11-of-17 shots, including two three-pointers, finishing the bout with 24 points, seven rebounds, five assists and a steal. Junior Michael Grant notched a 20-point performance, converting 7-of-9 attempted shots along with 5-of-7 attempts from the free-throw line. Senior Tre Mergerson tacked on 14 points, leading the team with eight rebounds on the night. Senior Justin Kemp matched Steger's team-high assist output with five assists of his own while Grant led the team with two steals and two blocks. Additional blocks were recorded by Mergerson and junior Charlie Peters, with Peters adding six rebounds and an assist to a strong defensive performance.

After finishing its season-long five-game home stand with the victory on Friday, the Rangers will now head to Lake Highlands for a critical district showdown against the reigning UIL 6A State Champions. Tip-off for Tuesday's showdown at Lake Highland H.S. is set for 7 p.m.
