Basketball Clinches Co-District Championship Following Dominant Senior Night Win Over Pearce

Jesuit Dallas basketball won a share of the University Interscholastic League (UIL) District 7-6A Championship, securing its seventh straight victory with a 67-36 victory over J.J. Pearce on Tuesday at Walsh Gymnasium. The Rangers celebrated senior night prior to the showdown with the Mustangs, and earned the co-district championship after Lake Highlands dropped its regular season finale to MacArthur, 74-70.
 
Senior Caleb Steger led the way for the Rangers with 17 points on 6-of-17 shooting, ending the game with a double-double by adding 10 rebounds. Senior Michael Grant added 14 points to the team's effort while the senior duo of Kevin Butera and Aidan Hunt scored eight points apiece. Senior Ethan Mahowald scored five points, grabbed five rebounds and secured three assists while senior Charlie Peters continued to be a force on the boards, tying Butera for second on the team with six rebounds on the night while helping the Rangers out-rebound Pearce, 47-26.
 
Jesuit's defense caused fits for the Mustangs, as the Rangers shut out Pearce, 10-0 in the first quarter and took a 29-5 lead into halftime. During the first half, Pearce was limited to 16 shots, closing out the half with a 2-for-16 clip and a 1-for-7 conversion rate from behind the arc. Jesuit out-scored Pearce, 32-16 in the paint, added 20 points off 14 Mustang turnovers and scored 28 second chance points off of 20 offensive rebounds.
 
The Rangers will matchup against Arlington Bowie in the UIL Region II-6A Division II Bi-District Round on Tuesday, February 18 at 7 p.m. at South Oak Cliff H.S. The Volunteers finished the regular season with a 22-12 record and earned a 9-5 record in District 8-6A, advancing to the tournament as the second seed in the Division II-6A bracket. The winner of Tuesday's showdown between the Rangers and Volunteers will advance to battle either Denton Guyer or McKinney in the UIL area round.
