Jesuit Outlasts Lamar in UIL Region I-6A Bi-District Round

A goal by junior Corbyn Wendorf in the 71st minute snapped a scoreless tie, helping propel Jesuit Dallas to a 2-0 win over Arlington Lamar in the bi-district round of the University Interscholastic League (UIL) Region I-6A Division II Playoff on Friday, March 21 in Irving, Texas. With the victory, Jesuit Dallas will advance to face Denton Guyer in the UIL area round on Tuesday, March 25 at 7 p.m. at John Clark Stadium in Plano, Texas.

In the second half, senior Noah McGough lined up for a throw-in, sending a ball well into the box where it hit the head of senior Clyde Araiza and deflected to Wendorf, who deposited the ball into the right side of the net to give Jesuit its first lead of the evening. Minutes later, junior Cooper McGough launched a deep pass to Araiza, who broke away from the last Lamar defender and slotted a shot past the Lamar goalkeeper to give Jesuit a two-goal lead with a minute left in regulation.

Overall, the Rangers (18-1) out-shot Lamar (9-3-7), 14-9 during the matchup. Seniors Marcelo Elizondo and Jake Chostner served as goalkeepers during the matchup, with Elizondo making two saves in the first half before Chostner secured two saves in the second. The Rangers' defensive midfield and backline, which included Octavio Monjaras, Hudson Thomas, Mario Zamora, Max Sabogal, Grant Gomez and Drew Koshakji alongside the Cooper and Noah McGough helped keep Lamar in check, yielding only four shots on target and holding the Vikings without a corner kick during the matchup.

Denton Guyer advanced to the second round with a 6-0 win over McKinney on Thursday, March 20. The winner of Tuesday's showdown between the Rangers and Wildcats will advance to play either El Paso Montwood or Byron Nelson in the Region I-6A Division II Semifinal.
