DALLAS - The Jesuit Dallas soccer team advanced to the championship game of the Meintser Invitational with a 5-3 shootout decision over Bryan Adams at Ranger Stadium on Friday.
It was the second-consecutive year the teams met in the semifinals and the second time that the Rangers advanced on penalty kicks.
Jesuit (1-0-1) will now face Prosper () in Saturday's championship at 4 p.m. The Eagles defeated Arlington Sam Houston, 1-0, in the other semifinal.
Jesuit struck first when
Ben Norman scored his first varsity goal in the 22nd minute on a cross from
Zane Roland. The celebration was short-lived as Bryan Adams tied it just 2:36 later on a spectacular head off a cross by Sebastian Melendez.
The game stayed that way for the final 45 minutes, forcing the penalty kick scenario to decide who would advance.
Both teams saw their first four kickers scored to set up a dramatic final round. The Cougars were kicking first and in the fifth round, Isaac Esparza was stopped by Jesuit's
Sage Jones. In the final kick,
Christian Bilger sent his ball into the net to set off a Ranger celebration to the right of the goal.
Jesuit outshot BA, 13-6 overall and 8-3 in shots on goal.
Jones made two saves in goal during the game.
Cooper McGough and Roland each took four shots to lead the Jesuit attack.
