Rangers Open Season With Close Loss to Mesquite

The Jesuit basketball team began the 2014-15 campaign in front of a lively crowd at Walsh Gym Tuesday night, dropping the home opener to Mesquite, 56-52. Jesuit trailed by as many as 16 points early in the game, but fought all the way back to tie the game late in the 4th quarter. A strong Skeeters squad narrowly outscored the Rangers in the final two minutes to take the contest.

Mesquite started quickly, scoring the game's first 10 points before Jesuit's Christian Nwosu got the Rangers on the board.  The margin held through the first two quarters as the Skeeters took a 10 point lead into halftime.  But Jesuit responded with a strong third quarter, capped by a Tom Weber three pointer with under a minute to go to bring Jesuit within three.  Sam Truxal followed up with a three pointer of his own to open the fourth quarter, bringing the score to 41-41. Mesquite's Bryson Robinson and Wesley Curry showed their quickness in the game's final frame, leading the Skeeters to a victory.

Truxal would finish the night with 11 points, including two three pointers. Jesuit's Michael McReynold's led the team with 17 points and 5 rebounds, while Nwosu also filled out the stat sheet with 9 points, 4 rebounds, and a team-leading 3 assists.  The varsity squad will play their first road game of the season Tuesday, November 25, at Highland Park.

Jesuit's sub-varsity teams also opened their season this week, sweeping Mesquite at the lower levels.  JV Gold, Freshman Gold, and Freshman Blue were all successful at home against Mesquite, and JV Blue won a dramatic season opener over Flower Mound with a buzzer-beater on Monday.
