Jesuit Outlasts Berkner in Key Road Win

Locked in a close battle in the second half, Jesuit turned to senior Peter Lynch, who scored 15 consecutive points for the team and catapulted the Rangers to a 59-53 victory over Berkner Tuesday night.  Lynch would finish the game with 19 points, all of them coming in the second half.

Jesuit started hot, as Hank Shotland hit three 3-pointers in the first half and led the team with 11 points at the intermission. With the score tied at 22-22 and 1:00 to play in the second quarter, Jesuit scored six points in the final minute of the half: Shotland hit a midrange jumper, Tyler Schlapkohl scored off an assist from Tom Weber, and Chris Nwosu put in a layup just before the buzzer to give Jesuit a 28-22 advantage at the break.

Lynch caught fire in the third, scoring all 10 of Jesuit's points in the frame. He remained hot to begin the fourth, showing versatility by scoring in the paint then knocking down a three pointer.  With 3:30 to play in the game, Lynch tied the score at 48-48 with his dangerous hook shot.  Moments later, Schlapkohl hit his second 3-pointer of the night to give Jesuit a 51-48 lead.

After a timeout, Lynch scored again on a perfectly executed back door cut, then Jesuit forced a turnover and Schlapkohl hit Christian Chiles for a break-away layup, giving Jesuit a commanding 55-48 lead with 1:30 to play.  Schlapkohl and Chiles went 4-for-4 on free throws down the stretch to seal the victory.

Lynch becomes the fourth different Ranger in four games to lead the team in points.  His 19 points matches Sam Truxal's 19 against Highland Park for the team high on the season.  Schlapkohl registered 12 points against Berkner, while Shotland scored 11.  Nwosu came down with 8 rebounds, a season high for any player, and Jesuit won the battle of the boards for the first time this season.

The Rangers now prepare for the 2014 Knights of Columbus Tournament, held Thursday-Saturday at Walsh Gym.  Jesuit takes on Molina Thursday evening at 7:30, then will play Friday at Saturday as well.
