Basketball Season Comes to an End in First Round of Playoffs

Box Score | Photos

The Jesuit basketball season came to an end Tuesday with a 65-62 loss to the Berkner Rams in the Bi-District round of the UIL 6A Playoffs. The Rangers finished the season with an 18-11 record, and it was Jesuit's ninth consecutive UIL playoff appearance.

Senior Peter Lynch scored 24 points in his final game in a Jesuit uniform, a season high for any player. Lynch carried his teammates admirably, at one point hitting 7 out of 8 Ranger buckets.

Berkner started hot, jumping out to an early 13-4 lead, before Jesuit came to life. Two consecutive three-pointers from Hank Shotland led Jesuit on a 9-0 run to close out the first quarter, part of a larger 15-2 run that gave the Rangers a 21-17 advantage early in the second frame. Shots kept dropping for the Rangers, as Tyler Schlapkohl hit two straight three-pointers to give Jesuit a 27-22 lead with 5:00 to play in the half. Late in the second quarter the Rangers impressed with ball movement and diverse offensive sets; Tom Weber, Christian Chiles, and Michael McReynolds scored on three consecutive possessions, and the Rangers carried a 35-29 lead into halftime.

After trading buckets early in the third quarter, Berkner's Torey Everret and Davis Steelman showed their prowess offensively. The Rams went on a 14-0 run, scoring 12 of those points in the final minutes of the third quarter. Everret would finish the game with 23 points; Steelman had 16. Down the stretch the Rangers would not go quietly, cutting an 8-point lead down to three in the final seconds. Berkner sealed the victory with solid free throw shooting down the stretch.

The game was a testament to Jesuit's eight seniors, who shared the ball and the scoring in their final game together. Seven of those eight seniors scored on the night, and after the game each was supported by a large Jesuit student section.

Michael McReynolds closes a three year varsity career with a 10.7 points per game average during his senior year. Peter Lynch scored a career-high in his final game Tuesday. Tyler Schlapkohl led the team in three-pointers made with 45 on the year. Christian Chiles manned the point and led the team in assists (60) and steals (45). Chris Nwosu brought in 119 rebounds and led the team with 24 blocks. Hank Shotland was a vocal leader on the team and put up 11 in the playoff game. Sam Truxal had one of the top season performances with 19 point against Highland Park in just his second varsity game. Tom Weber was a consistent presence down low despite fighting through a tough injury.
