Rangers Return to UIL State Tournament: A 9-1 win over Atascocita in the UIL Region II Finals has propelled Jesuit Dallas back to the UIL State Tournament for the second consecutive year, a feat that has not occured in the 6A bracket in three years. Junior Jacob Palisch hurled a complete, seven-inning game, striking out 13 batters to only one run on three hits. Senior Jared Kengott and junior Mark Ready drove in two runs each, while fourth year Kyle Muller went 3-for-4 with a run scored and RBI. In total, Jesuit saw eight batters record at least one hit en route to the UIL State Tournament.
Muller Earns National Honor: In its 31st year of honoring the nation's best high school athletes, The Gatorade Company, in collaboration with USA TODAY High School Sports, today announced Kyle Muller of Jesuit College Preparatory School (Dallas, Tx.) as its 2015-16 Gatorade National Baseball Player of the Year. Muller was surprised with the news at school by Texas Ranger and former World Series MVP Cole Hamels. Muller will enter the weekend with a .393 batting average, leading the squad in hits (55), RBI (52), triples (5), home runs (15) and slugging percentage (.850). On the mound, Muller is 8-0 with a 0.36 ERA, striking out 133 batters this season while holding opponents to a .103 batting average. Muller has two no-hitters on the year, first against Sunset on Mar. 18 before no-hitting North Mesquite in the Rangers' Bi-District round clincher on May 7.
Magic Numbers: The Jesuit pitching staff has continued a dominant year on the rubber, striking out 10.5 batters per game throughout the postseason. Owning a 4.4 strikeout-to-walk ratio, Ranger pitchers have allowed, on average, 4.48 hits and 1.55 runs per game, compared to the 7.9 hits and 4.9 runs scored on average by the Jesuit offense. Throughout the playoffs, the Rangers are 7-0 when scoring first, and 4-0 when scoring in the first inning. Jesuit is unbeaten in the postseason when taking a lead of any sort, and are a combined 8-1 when scoring three or more runs. Senior Pete Hamrick is still the leader in the clubhouse in batting average during the postseason, hitting .452 with 14 hits, 10 RBI and nine runs scored. The Rangers are batting .305 with runners on base and .306 with a runner in scoring position, logging 16 two-out RBI and 35 leadoff hits.
Scouting UIL Final Four: Jesuit will take on Langham Creek from District 17-6A on Friday, with the winner of the semifinal set to battle the winner of San Antonio Johnson and Amarillo, the second game of Friday's 6A action. The Lobos enter championship weekend with considerable momentum after toppling Deer Park in the Region III Championship. Deer Park entered the series the No. 1 team in the nation, according to MaxPreps, with a 36-1 record entering the series and captured game one, 9-0. However, the Lobos came storming back with a wild, 3-2 win in game two, capped by a walk-off, pinch-hit single by Gabriel Amaro. Langham Creek clinched the stunning upset and its first trip to the UIL 6A State Tournament with a 4-0 win in game three. The Lobos will enter the state semi with a 30-12 record. San Antonio Johnson (31-5) defeated Laredo United, 6-5, to complete a two-game sweep in the Region IV Championship series, clinching the program's first state tournament berth after falling short in the regional finals last year. Amarillo completes the final four, reaching its first state tournament in program history with a two-game sweep over Midland Lee, guaranteeing that the winner of this year's UIL 6A State Tournament will secure the first state title for their respective program.
