Rangers Begin District Play Against Coppell

Jesuit Drops Final Non-District Bout
Facing an Associated Press Texas Top 10 opponent for the second time in three weeks, Jesuit dropped a 47-10 decision to perennial state power Lake Travis on September 9. Jesuit dominated time of possession, but the Cavaliers finished with 472 yards of offense, scoring 35 unanswered points to derail the Rangers' upset aspirations. Junior Parker Towns threw for 158 yards, senior Evan Jackson finished the game with 24 carries and 98 rushing yards while John Wunderlick led the Blue and Gold with seven receptions for 46 yards. Defensively, senior Andrew Miskell continued his hot start to the year, finishing the game with an eight-yard sack. Senior Michael Schoettmer and junior Hank Bitterman made three solo tackles apiece, and third year Israel Ollarzabal recorded his third field goal of the year from 28 yards out.

Seniors Providing Defensive Spark
The Rangers entered the 2016 season with 17 seniors on defense, a contingent accountable for 65 of the team's 107 total tackles. Jesuit fourth year Andrew Miskell currently leads the team in tackles for loss, making four stops behind the line, including both of the team's sacks this year. Linebacker Michael Schoettmer's 7.5 tackles ties fellow fourth year Billy Daly for the fourth highest total on the team. Daly has broken up two passes this year, making six solo stops. Senior captain Jordan Rice has logged two tackles for loss totaling 21 yards, while fourth year John Guzman has the team's lone fumble recovery.

Time is on Their Side
Three games into the 2016 season, Jesuit has continued to dominate time of possession. On average, the Rangers hold the ball for over 31 of a possible 48 minutes per game. The Rangers have controlled the pace, averaging 10:04 time of possession, and have not logged a quarterly possession of less than 8:55 in the first during any game this year. By comparison, the 2015 Ranger football team finished the season with a 27:49 average time of possession per contest. In the first quarter of last week's loss to Lake Travis, the Cavaliers only held the ball for 43 seconds.

Palisch Back Behind Center
Friday's game is slated to mark the return of Jacob Palisch at starting quarterback after junior Parker Towns impressed during two non-district starts. The reigning UIL District 9-6A Most Valuable Player returned against Lake Travis as the squad's punter, averaging 47.5 yards per punt including a 62-yard boot on his first punt of the evening. Towns showed Ranger fans that the future looks bright with him at quarterback, completing 46-of-81 passes for 468 yards and two touchdowns. Averaging 156 passing yards per game, Towns marshaled the squad to 353.3 offensive yards per game. Last season, Palisch threw for 1,903 yards and 24 touchdowns, adding 11 more touchdowns on the ground while closing the season with 495 rushing yards.

Last Time They Met…
Coppell defeated the Rangers, 35-28, in the last meeting between the two teams on September 9, 2011 at Postell Stadium. Trailing by 14 points in the fourth quarter, the Rangers forged a chance to score the game-tying touchdown at the Coppell 7-yard line with 2.6 seconds remaining. Jesuit's Jack Brezette threw for 421 yards and four touchdowns on 33-of-63 passing, while current Texas Longhorn Jake Oliver scored twice, finishing the game with 16 catches for 276 yards. Coppell's Luke Jenner carried the ball 27 times for 205 yards, and Jacob Logan opened the game with a 90-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. The Rangers aim to snap a six-game skid against the Cowboys on Friday; Jesuit's last defeated Coppell in 2004, 28-17.

Up Next
Jesuit will face Richardson Eagles for the first time on the gridiron since 2013 on Friday, September 30 at Eagle-Mustang Stadium. Jesuit enters the game with a six-game winning streak against the Eagles dating back to the 2004 season. The Rangers will return to Postell Stadium on Friday, October 7, when the Skyline Raiders visit Jesuit for the second consecutive year. Last season, Jesuit defeated Skyline, 24-21, snapping the Raiders' 49-game district winning streak en route to the first outright UIL District Championship in program history.
