Rangers Shut Out Plano West: Despite a rain delay that pushed kickoff from Friday night to Saturday morning, Jesuit Dallas posted its first shutout since 2015 with a 42-0 win over Plano West at John Clark Stadium. Junior quarterback Kevin Shuman closed the contest completing 7-of-19 passes for 173 yards, throwing touchdowns to seniors Nick Hafertepe, Jack Hajdu, Brody Hilberth and Travis Whisler. Hajdu led the receiving corps with two catches for 66 yards while junior E.J. Smith led Jesuit in rushing with 154 yards and a touchdown. The Jesuit defense racked up nine tackles for loss and two sacks while limiting Plano West to 170 yards of total offense. Senior Collin Lark posted six solo tackles, three tackles for loss and a sack while junior Houston Hummel racked up five tackles and caught an interception deep in Plano West territory. Junior Jack Barton added six tackles, senior Noah Villasana contributed five stops while senior Pierce Strong and junior Nash Corcoran broke up two passes each.
Jesuit Scores Non-District Win over Wylie: The Rangers earned their first non-district victory since the 2015 season with a 35-14 win over Wylie on Sept. 14. Junior Mitchell Campbell, sophomores Kyle Heckel and Jake Taylor, Shuman and Smith scored rushing touchdowns as Jesuit totaled 151 yards on the ground. Smith added a team-high five receptions for 76 yards while Whisler posted a squad-leading 78 receiving yards. Junior Jhalen Spicer caught his first interception of the season while senior Noah Villasana led the team with six tackles. Seniors Witt Chambers and Will Leitnick racked up five tackles each as Chambers tacked on two tackles for loss.
Offense Gaining Momentum: Jesuit has averaged 38.5 points per game over the past two weeks, a 20-point improvement over the first two games of the 2018 campaign. Since Sept. 7, Shuman has thrown for 211.5 yards per game; Whisler, Hafertepe, Smith and Hajdu have averaged 35 or more receiving yards; and Smith has added 89 yards per game on the ground. Jesuit has averaged 432 all-purpose yards over the last two weeks and have converted nine third down opportunities while holding foes to an 18.5 percent effeciency rate (5-of-27) on third down.
Broncos Drop Bout to Panthers: Plano East quarterback Brandon Mallory was an unstoppable force, completing 19 passes for 383 yards and four touchdowns to upend Boyd, 42-21 on Saturday morning. The Broncos turned the ball over twice but saw their defense come up with a touchdown when Tristian Lamb blocked a third quarter punt and recovered the ball in the end zone. Boyd running back Ja'Tyler Shaw rushed for two touchdowns and 133 yards. Boyd quarterback Christian Ziegler currently leads the team in passing and rushing to usher a Bronco offense that averages 22.8 points per game. Ziegler has scored five rushing touchdowns this season and averages 67 rushing yards per game while averaging 110.3 yards per game through the air.
The Last Time They Met: Jesuit Dallas defeated McKinney Boyd, 45-10, in the UIL Region 2-6A Bi-District round on Nov. 16, 2012. The Rangers leapt out to a 21-10 lead at halftime and outscored the Broncos 24-0 in the second half. Quarterback Jack Brezette '13 completed 22-of-32 passes for 256 yards and three touchdowns while the Ranger running back corps of Orion Salters '14, Will Brown '13 and Pierce Durham '13 combined for 155 yards and three touchdowns. The Jesuit defense forced four McKinney Boyd turnovers, including three recovered fumbles and an interception. Jesuit holds a 2-0 all-time advantage against Boyd, earning its first win over the Broncos with a 42-35 overtime victory on Oct. 30, 2009.Â
Up Next: After next week's bye, Jesuit will start a three-game road trip on Friday, Oct. 12 against Prosper. The Rangers will then travel to Allen for a battle with the Eagles on Oct. 19 before closing the road trip against Plano Senior on Oct. 26. Jesuit will return to Postell Stadium on Nov. 2 to celebrate homecoming and senior night against McKinney.
