Jesuit Dallas basketball is headed back to the University Interscholastic League (UIL) Region I-6A Tournament after upending Richardson, 60-45 on Tuesday at Walsh Gym. The Rangers entered the fourth quarter trailing the Eagles, 37-34, but responded by outscoring Richardson, 26-8 in the fourth quarter. The victory, combined with Highland Park's 60-36 win over J.J. Pearce, sends Jesuit into the tournament as the fourth and final qualifying team out of District 7-6A on a memorable senior night for the Blue and Gold.
The Rangers were led by sophomore
Caleb Steger, who secured a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Junior
Justin Kemp hit three massive three-pointers, closing out the bout with 14 points. Senior
Tai Kryger secured 11 points, senior
Dylan Gibbons and junior
Will Bronson scored six points apiece while senior
Michael Mathie scored four points, notched four rebounds and led the team with four assists. Senior
Charlie Needham added three points to the Jesuit effort.Â
Jesuit Dallas excelled in the fourth quarter, shooting 6-of-8 from the field, 3-of-4 from three-point range, and 11-of-11 from the charity stripe. The Ranger defense held Richardson to one made field goal on the Eagles' last 17 shot attempts, helping lead to a 17-4 run to close the game.
Postseason play will begin for the Rangers as Jesuit will match up against District 8-6A Co-Champion and state-ranked No. 5 Arlington Martin on Feb. 21 at Flower Mound H.S. Tip-off between the Rangers and Warriors is set for 7 p.m.
