Rangers Calms War Eagles: With the team facing elimination after a 3-0 loss in game one of the series, Jesuit Dallas junior pitcher JJ Montenegro scored a pair of wins in a 12-hour span to send the Rangers to the University Interscholastic League (UIL) 6A Region II Final with wins on Friday and Saturday against Conroe Oak Ridge. Jesuit fell in game one, 3-0, despite an 11-strikeout appearance by junior Jacob Palisch. Facing elimination, senior Kyle Muller threw nine innings of strong work, retiring two runs on seven hits, walking four while striking out eight to keep Jesuit within striking distance. Run-scoring hits by senior Pete Hamrick and junior Mark Ready in the first and sixth innings, respectively, set the stage for a bases-loaded, walk-off walk forced by junior JT Mix to force a decisive game three. A double in the first by senior Bryce Bonner, a single in the fifth by Hamrick and a home run in the sixth by senior Jared Bond set the stage for junior JJ Montenegro, who secured his second victory in 12 hours to vault Jesuit to a 3-0, game three win.
Montenegro Earns Weekly Honor: Junior JJ Montenegro earned JesuitRangers.org Ranger of the Week plaudits after his phenomenal performance during the UIL 6A Region II Semifinal. Montenegro finished the weekend with 8.1 innings pitched, blanking the War Eagles while only allowing six hits, striking out five batters compared to only one walk. Montenegro moved his playoff record to 2-2, striking out nine total hitters over 12.1 innings of work. Earlier in the season, Montenegro threw a no-hitter against UIL District 9-6A rival Sunset, striking out 11 batters.
Ranger Arm Brigade Firing on All Cylinders: In total, the Jesuit Dallas pitching staff has logged five double-digit strikeout performances throughout the postseason, forging a 1.51 earned run average. Striking out 95 combined batters, the duo of senior Kyle Muller and junior Jacob Palisch will enter the weekend with a 0.64 ERA, striking out 10.6 batters per nine innings. The pitching staff has held opposing batters to a .146 batting average (13-of-89) with two outs, picking up a 4.3 strikeout-to-walk ratio and holding hitters under .300 with runners onbase. This season, Ranger pitchers have held opposing batters to a .207 combined batting average.
Offensive Execution: Senior Pete Hamrick enters the UIL 6A Region II Final with a team-leading .483 batting average, tying senior Jared Bond with a team-high nine RBI while leading the squad with a .625 on-base percentage. Jesuit has been aggressive on the basepaths throughout the offseason, converting 17-of-25 stolen base attempts, a team-leading six of which have been recorded by senior Kyle Muller. Junior Will Guzman has scattered eight hits during the playoffs, forging a .381 batting average. In total, Jesuit has outscored opponents, 50-25 throughout the postseason, and have combined for 18 extra base hits, including five home runs, three of which were launched by senior Jared Bond. In total, five Rangers have recorded five or more RBI during the team's 11 postseason contests, with Muller (5) and fellow fourth year Bryce Bonner (5) joining junior Mark Ready (6). Senior Matt Horvath is currently second on the team with 11 hits, recording a .333 postseason batting average over 11 starts. Finally, Jesuit has also exhibited patience at the plate, evidenced by the 44 walks forced by Ranger batters throughout the playoffs including the walk-off free pass forced by Mix on Friday.
Defensive Dominance: With a team holding a combined .963 fielding percentage, Jesuit Dallas has turned 29 double plays throughout the season, compared to 15 recorded by opponents. Junior JT Mix has been involved in 16 of the team's double plays, while senior Matt Horvath has been a part of 13. The Rangers have held opponents to a .186 overall batting average, recording a groundout on 59-of-62 attempts.
