A three-sport high school standout whose reputation and resume as a leader in football, baseball, and basketball during the mid-70’s inspired his teammates and won the affection of his coaches, Bernie Hogan ’76 enters the Jesuit Dallas Sports Hall of Fame hailed by 2015 SHOF Inductee Ted Tobolka ’78 as “Jesuit’s most deserving graduate.”
Following a busy and awards-laden senior year, Hogan was the recipient of the Leo Ostick Award as Jesuit’s top student-athlete for 1974-75. A two-year starter and three-year letterman in football, Hogan’s dominance on both sides of the ball led to numerous honors at the regional and state level.
Hogan was a member of the 1974 and 1975 TCIL state championship teams, earning all-district and TCIL All-State designation following both seasons. His 1975 campaign resulted in additional accolades as a Dallas Times Herald All-Area First Team Offense and Second Team Defense selection.
Hogan also excelled on the diamond for the Rangers, where he was a three-year starter, and a two-time all-district and all-state baseball pick. In his first varsity season, Hogan was named TCIL Sophomore of the Year while helping Jesuit Dallas to the 1973 state title, its first in program history. Individual district and state plaudits followed his junior and senior seasons. Not content with resting between his two primary seasons, Hogan was a two-year contributor for Jesuit’s winning basketball program, and started the entire season during the 1975-76 campaign.
Lauded by local and regional media for his prowess on the gridiron, Hogan received a lot of interest from Division I coaches across the country. By-passing offers from the likes of Notre Dame and Navy, he accepted a football scholarship to Rice University, where an immensely promising collegiate career was cut drastically short by injury. Hogan went on to graduate from the University of Dallas Graduate School of Management, and currently works as an IT manager at Ascension Information Services in Austin.
