John Murphy was an outstanding back, who despite only donning the Blue & Gold for two seasons, made an indelible mark on the Rangers’ grid iron program. An outstanding back, Murphy was named Dallas Morning News All-Private Offensive Player of the Year following both the 1969 and 1970 seasons. His awards-filled senior campaign also included All-American laurels as well as All-Greater Dallas Honorable Mention plaudits.

Murphy accepted an athletic scholarship at Arkansas University, where he played for one year under head coach Frank Broyles. Transferring to the University of North Texas, Murphy graduated in 1976.
