William Moore was a four-year letterman in cross country in track at Jesuit Dallas, where he pieced together a distinguished career. He earned All-District honors in 1976 and 1977; All-State in 1978 and 1979 and was the 1979 TCIL state champion. On the track, Moore won the 1979 state title in the mile and was the 1980 runner-up. He graduated as the School's record holder in the event with a time of 4:24.1.
After graduating from Jesuit, Moore attended Rice University on a scholarship. At Rice, he was a four-year letterman and two-time individual qualifier for the NCAA Cross Country Championships. He was captain and All-SWC in 1982 and 1984. Moore lettered all four years in track and was All-SWC in 1983 and 1985. He graduated as the Rice record holder in the 3000-meter steeplechase (8:53.0). Splitting 4:10 in the mile during his collegiate years, he was awarded the Bob Quin Rice Student Athlete Scholarship in 1985.
Moore’s post-collegiate running was hampered by four years of Medical School, and three years of Pediatric residency. However, since medical school he won dozens of local road races: the Metroplex Mile Championship race in 1997 in 4:16 and the White Rock Half-Marathon three of four years (he didn't run it in 1997). He was voted USA Track and Field Southwest Association Runner of the Year in 1998. He won the White Rock Marathon in 1998 in an Olympic Trials qualifying time of 2:20:37, then bettered that time nine weeks later at the Austin Marathon with a mark of 2:19:15. Moore was once ranked 42nd out of all runners who qualified for the men’s USA Olympic Marathon Trials.Â
