A three-year letterman in football and a two-year letterman in track & field, John White played on teams that never lost a district game, while winning the 1982 TCIL State Championship. Moreover, he won the state title in the pole vault, setting School, district and TCIL state records in the process.
The starting quarterback and free safety for the Rangers, White gained more than 3,000 yards of total offense his senior year. Hus rushed for 1,800 yards, finishing second in the DFW area, and averaged more than 10 yards per carry in district play. He also led the team in interceptions. Selected to the TCIL All-State team his senior year as both a quarterback and safety, White was also named a Catholic All-American. Following a tremendous performance against Bishop Lynch, in which he rushed for 222 yards, scored a touchdown, and threw for another, he was cited as the Dallas Morning News Player of the Week.
In track & field, White won numerous 5A meets in the pole vault, and during his senior year, finished second in district competition in the shot put. At graduation, he received the Leo F. Ostdick Award as Jesuit’s student-athlete of the year.
White signed with Duke University, where he made the travelling varsity squad as a freshman, and was a starting wide receiver by the beginning of his sophomore year. During the 1985 season, against archrival North Carolina, White had a 50-yard reception that set up the winning field goal with seconds to play.
