John Spaulding entered Jesuit as a sophomore and began to swim for the Rangers under coach Herb Bowles, as well as with the AAU. While at Jesuit, he set TCIL state records in several events, lettered, and qualified as an All-American all three years at Jesuit. He was co-captain of the swim team his senior year and qualified for the 1980 Olympic Trials, which were boycotted by the U.S. Olympic Team.
Upon graduation from Jesuit, Spaulding received an athletic scholarship to SMU. While at SMU, he earned All-American honors all four years. In his junior year, he swam anchor on the medley relay at the NCAA National Championships, which set both American and NCAA records (3:12.63). During his senior year at SMU, Spaulding was team co-captain and received the A.R. Barr Award which is given each year to a senior for outstanding leadership, dedication and loyalty to the team. In 1984, he again qualified for the Olympic Trials and placed 12th in the 100-meter butterfly (55.60).
