From the moment he walked on campus, Steve Barker was a standout in the football program. After a dominating rookie season in which he played fullback and linebacker for the freshman team, Barker began his sophomore year as the starting varsity fullback. He earned All-District honors that season and was named Sophomore of the Year, as Jesuit advanced to the TCIL State Championship. In 1975, Barker replicated the All-District distinction while helping the Rangers shutout Central Catholic (San Antonio), 43-0, en route to the program’s first state crown since 1967. Honored as the team’s Most Valuable Player, Barker was also named All-State.

Barker’s senior campaign resulted in a bevy of individual awards. Leading the Rangers to their second straight state title, he earned All-American plaudits while picking up his second All-State citation and third All-District honor. After the season, Barker was also named to the Dallas Times Herald High School Football Honor Roll.

Barker attended TCU for two years on a football scholarship and as part of the Horned Frogs’ linebacking corps. He then transferred to the University of Colorado, where he played another season. Barker graduated from Colorado in 1980.
